hey guys! i recently obtained a OLP guitar...the trouble is I can't find ANY info on it whatsoever, and apparently neither can anyone else. I posted a new guitar day thread on another website, so you can see the whole thing here:

UG Community @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com - NGD! OLP Content inside. Now what model is it...

If you check the link, there's a full review, as well as a lot of people wondering what it is as well haha. but here's some photos of it

Ok, it's a one pickup axis model of some sort. Thing is, i can't find any info on it. I picked it up for $125, used. I've considered maybe someone repainted it and filled in the slot for the neck pickup, but i'm kinda hoping that isn't what happened. So...sorry if this is kind of scattered.

Basically my question is what kind of guitar do I have and why can't I find any info on it? Any help is appreciated guys.

Hi,

You can't find much information on OLPs because they were discontinued entirely a few years ago.

Basically, Ernie Ball was licensing their design and specs to OLP (a separate company) who then produced these cheap versions of Music Mans. They had Axis models, John Petrucci models etc.

They were very cheap, about $350 for a new model. Nowadays you can find them used for about $100 or $150.

They are also very low quality in my opinion, they go out of tune and have a horrible feeling compared to Music Mans.

As far as your guitar specifically, don't worry about the neck pickup. Nobody took it out and filled in the hole, it came that way straight out of the factory.

The thing with these guitars is that even if you swap the pickups for e.g. DiMarzios, the guitar will still sound nothing like a Music Man. They are that bad.

After OLP, Ernie Ball themselves took over producing a cheaper (but much better than OLP) version of Music Man guitars. They are called 'Sterling' guitars and they are in the $500-$1,000 price range but they are good guitars for the price. Definitely recommended for beginners. However, for a little bit more you can get a used but REAL Music Man.

Actually, the OLP's were not bad for the price. I upgraded a couple of them and they are "dynamite" guitars!! Of course they are NOT the genuine article, never the less a great price point.

The Sterling line meets their price point extremely well too, being in some sense the replacement for the discontinued OLP.

But ya know, anything connected to EBMM is ALWAYS a score!
