New to these boards - EVH refurb?

Hey there,

I picked up a "player" EVH Music Man off the Bay a few months ago with the thought of enjoying it out of the case and/or refurbishing and flipping it. these are very cool guitars and reasonably rare. problem is the top is really not that amazing. its a lightly flamed amber top. the back has a fair amount of belt rash and some cracks in the clear coat. I paid $1400 for it and it seems to me that the top would prevent big money from every being achieved. Its in very good mechanical shape and plays superbly.

I'll post pics tomorrow but my general question is

refurbish and flip it (I'm not that attached to it due to the bland top and the fact that I've recently started my own guitar business and I prefer to play those).

keep it as a player

sell it as is to someone who's looking for a player's EVH

Well it's kinda tough to evaluate an EVH without pictures, but $1400 sounds like a steal if it plays fine. If it plays good and sounds good, then it's all good!

I say just keep it, play it, and enjoy it!

When you say refurb it, what exactly do you mean? What would you do, exactly, to "refurb' it? My thoughts are this: VH is on tour with a new album. This is a big plus for EVH owners.The economy is in the sh&^er. When things turn around, you will sell it at a much greater value. If by "refurb" you mean "alter", don't do it. That would only de-value it.

I wouldn't mess with it. You might want to give Gruhn Guitars in Nasville a call. They give great advice on the topic of "refurbishing"...

thanks guys. sorry still no pics. i'm wrapping up a Model A build and starting a plexi build. too many projects..

what I mean by refurb is just freshen the body up. sand the back down, respray black and redo the clear on the whole body. The neck, frets, etc, are all excellent. very little stain on the board. looking at it again last night, its not that bad of a top, just not as spectacular as some of the quilts that fetch $3300 in a down market...

any recommendations for a reputable shop to do the above work? I'm in Norcal so close proximity is a plus.

I would keep it and play it also. Its an EBMM so its all good.

Sorry, but I think you'd kill the value on it. Not that you'd be doing anything radical to alter it, but... Personally, I'd rather have an original beater than a refurb. Automatically, you scare away a lot of prospective buyers, IMO.

Frankly, you got a steal of a deal. I'd keep it and enjoy.

My EVH is all beat up too but it plays great. I like the fact that it's all worn. If it was in great condition I'd baby it and play it much less. I thought about getting it refurbed but It's not worth it to me. So If I want a case queen EVH I'll get one some day. Until then it gets played every day. Enjoy that EVH.

I would say hold onto it as a player as you have a hell of a guitar to play out on without having to worry about nicking it up.

On a side note it would be cool if EB would offer a limited time period to refurbish the old ones that have faded. They had done this for awhile some years back as Geoff Knapp has one of the last ones they did before stopping. Since they are using the same hand rubbed staining method on the Axis tributes now would be as good a time as any. I am also certain that it would also be beneficial for everyone as they would probably get a few hundred guitars sent in to be brought back to their original beauty and since they are the original manufacturer this would be the only way that guys would be willing to have them done.
