New Toy

As some of you may know, I had been without a Stingray 5 for a few months and just picked on up last week because it felt odd to not have one. It looks like this:

So my house, having just moved, was a disaster and I had no place to play loud. I plugged the bass in for a couple of minutes when I first got it just to make sure it was okay....it was, but sounded mighty zingy with rounds through my little Ampeg B-50R practice amp. I thought 'Hmm, gotta change these strings before this is going to be right'.

But my studio is finally finished and I can get out there and crank it up! Yes! And I plugged the bass into the Sunn 1200s and the two Ampeg cabs and SWEET JESUS what a cool tone, even with the rounds!

Yes, yes, I love the Bongos and I love the Reverends and etc etc etc, but there really is something special about a kick-asss Stingray 5. And this is one.

I just wanted to tell you guys that.

I don't want to hear crap about that Peavey cab, either! It lived in a bar for months, was part of the house rig, and it sounded great. I almost gave it up when I moved...what's the point in moving a Peavey 1-15? But it sounded too good to leave behind.

The Ampeg cabs are my go-to stuff. On top of them is a Sunn 1200s, a Korg tuner and a Furman in a rack. Right next to that, you can see my MusicMan 2-12. Great cabinet, although it weighs as much as my car.

Recording gear will go on that table and the converted kitchen island serves as a martini bar and additional workspace when not used as drinking surface.

If I get around to it, I'll change that black PG out for tort on the SR5. I may or may not ever get around to it...the thing sounds killer, and if it ain't broke, I have a tendency to not fix it. If I had a tort guard laying around, it would be on there already, though.

The studio is indeed downstairs and on the other end of the house from the bedrooms. Thankfully, it only butts up against an office and a stairwell and a couple of closets, so I can stay up late and make horrific noises with no complaints.

oh yea, the SR5 looks great. One of my favorite looks is the Natural with a torty pickguard. There is something to be said for the simplicity of the black pg though. It looks good on almost every color of stingray.

That was before I moved to Texas and formed the psychoneurotic punk-jazz ensemble.

I think our song list when I had that setup was mostly Deep Purple and Allman Brothers and what is now considered "classic rock", although it certainly wasn't classic at the time.

We also played most of the 2nd Captain Beyond album, if anyone remembers that....we were not exactly your normal bar band in southern Mississippi. People can't DANCE to stuff in 11/32, even if it does rock.
