Hey all, I was wondering what was best for the long term for guitar storage between it staying in its case or hanging on a wall by the neck. Right I've been keeping my JP6 in its case when I can manage to put it down and I was unsure if this was the best way for it to last.

Thanks

I always put my balls in their cases......

Just feel safer in the knowledge they are protected in their cases!!

also I do not think that hanging them on the wall should do any harm at all, every guitar store in the world does this without any affect occurring

either is safe I would say, also If Im not playing mine and am only putting it away for like 10 mins I have a normal guitar stand that I place them on

hope this helps any

you dont mean if you want to store it for like a year and not play it? if that is what you mean, i advise loosening the tension in everything, strings just a bit and trem springs and stuff if you got a trem. use of a humidifer of some kind is also good.

but if you mean just storing day to day in between playing time, anything will do, as long as it's safe! i always have mine on stands.

I keep em all out. Just make sure you have enough humidity in the winter so the necks don't get too dry.

What's the EB customer service position on this? I've heard conflicting reports. I've heard that you should NOT loosen anything because if you loosen the strings, you could give the neck the opportunity to twist or bend any way it wants. Is this true?

When I'm done for the day, I case them. The weather's too fickle and extreme here to leave them out. If I fire up the wood stove, my balls get moved to my office. I was pretty lax with this last year, and one of my silo's necks was getting weird around the 15th fret. Fortunately with better climate control, it's returned to normal.

Never "hang" the guitar for long periods (gravity and body weight) will take a toll over a long period of time on the neck. Humidify always, whether storage or not.

Two ways to store (you may want to confirm with Jon):

1. You should NEVER loosen strings a "little" for storage, no point! Either leave them on, with all parts adjusted for normal play; OR

2. Take them completely off and loosen TR completely (also springs etc.)

I personally leave the strings on at normal tension with all parts in normal position. This is the way the guitar "expects" to be and was designed to be in this position for long periods of time whether played or not (even decades).

If you do take the strings off completely, then the neck (because of no TR pressure) will "relax". And, somewhat like a muscle, at a point in time in the future that relaxed neck will be asked to change it's character and "Stand at Attention"!! Keep the neck functioning how it was designed to function.:)

I keep mine on the stands, they're beautiful to look at and I find I'm more apt to do my practicing if I can just reach out and grab one...

Downside: the kids reach out and grab them, too. (That's alright, they all play better than me anyway) :)

Mine all hang on the wall ready to go. The Petrucci's been that way going on 4 years now. I've never had a problem other than an occasional tuning tweak to compensate for the weather changes. The only time they see a case or gig bag is to leave the house.
