Hey Simon, does the Al SSS sound real twangy like a tele or strat single coil sound..? Please explain the difference from the Al HH....or an Axis? I think I am getting GAS for an Al....I need more info......Thanks
Tim, I don't have an AL SSS but from what I hear they are indeed 'twangy' compared to the other models. I think they have Seymour Duncan pick-ups voiced like that for Albert Lee as he likes them that way. I do have the 3mm90 model and I find that is great for cleans with plenty of body but quite fiery when you turn up the gas. My green HH is a wonderful tone machine with tons of bite and body and a very noticeable range of tones in all 5 settings which is one thing I really like. The all rosewood neck seems to give it some real depth to the tone. Finally, the PDN HH has a different character again. Seems to have a lot more bite and aggression but again loads of character in the 5 different switch positions. I think the roasted maple neck is the reason, and it reminds me a lot of the Axis sound-wise. My advice would be to go for a std HH with full r/w neck but really any AL will have you crying with laughter, trust me on that! Think I might need to track down an sss now.
