My dad bought me a Benji Madden MM black with matching headstock and rosewood finger board, it is coming from Germany so I don't have it yet but boy am I excited I have 2 madden green mm 1 I play and have punk stickers all over, the second I have tucked away clean and has barely been played I picked it up for 600 us dollars. I love this guitar it fits my playing style so much, punk is what I play and what I love. I will post pics when it arrives

now my rant

it seems everyone on this board plays guitar in ways I could only dream of or wouldn't want to.... no offense
everyone seems like they are very skilled and have so much knowledge of the guitar
when I read or post on this board I feel like a Benji Madden among Lukes and Petruccis
this wont effect my being here. I find it kind of funny like I'm a little brother asking his big brother questions
and lastly I want to thank this place for being so kind to me over the years of MM guitar playin

I feel your pain..:D My playing is nowhere near most of the forum members, but it doesn't bother me really. Just enjoy playing guitar and always will. Don't worry, you're not alone ;)

Congrats on the new guitar!

For all the skill that many of the players here have, I'll wager that many can't play punk well, in the same way that many can't play blues or ska or reggae well. May seem easy on the surface (less 'technique' and theory) but the nuance and feel required to get things 'right' is something that takes a lot of time and 'study' to nail or even appreciate. Seasoned players spot the pretenders in a heart beat, and the pretenders don't even realise anything is missing.

For this reason, I never play in my buddy's ska band (The Regal Kings, check them out!) even though I'm his go-to guitarist for pretty much everything else. I'm just not a guitar player who does ska well. (Nor am I a 'shredder' or technical wizard). I know something is missing but I don't know what it is because I've yet to immerse myself in the genre. And he has asked me but I've said "no, JC (Vivron) does a way better job than I do, he's the guy you need".

So don't think you are in any way a 'little brother' or inferior, as one of the few real punk payers here, you are a "big brother" in that sense.

I think this forum would benefit from more discussion of more varied styles and interests. I know it's a little complicated because this is the official company forum and we have to respect the rules to always keep content relevant to EBMM, and EBMM guitars are not common in certain genres. But St Vincent and Hunter Hayes coming on board as EBMM artists will be a good thing, not just for the company, but I hope for the vitality and diversity of forum community too.

I feel your grief. I'm an old dog who finds it very difficult to learn new tricks!
I'd love to sweep up and down the fretboard in a combination of arpeggios and tapping - I can't!

I'd love to know all the music theory behind what I play - I don't

I do play live and have been told complimentary things about my feel and tone - hey that's great.
guitar playing hasn't put a roof over my head but it's opened a few doors and led me to meeting some great people.

Congrats on the new guitar!

+1 I'm a blues pentatonic guy but absolutely LOVE it on my AL. No other guitar compares....

Congrats on the guitar, also don't worry or feel out and of place with your playing, everyone has different levels of playing, music is a way to express your self just play the way you play and make it yours.. I have been playing guitar a long time and I know many who have played less time then I have who can do circles around my playing.. I play guitar for fun and to get my feelings out... Just play and enjoy...

I can honestly say that, although I have improved over the years, I still feel like I don't deserve most of the guitars I own.

As long as you enjoy it, and take others' abilities as inspiration and entertainment (which is what they should be) then you are fine BillP!

Hi Bill, I would love to see a pic of the beat up Madden next to the case queen.

Congrats on the new one. Give your Dad a hug for being the best Dad ever.

This post makes me smile. I got my first guitar (an EBMM) from a pro who was absolutely amazing. I remember struggling to make my fIngers work.

Over the last 20 years, I've gotten better. Petrucci I am not, but with the exception of a few genres, I could hang in most situations I've come across. One of the things I've learned that really stands out is there's something to be said for attitude, or in some cases, attitude problem. :D

Technique is important, but it doesn't always make for interesting music. A couple of weeks ago, the Stiff Little Fingers rolled through my city. Irish punk bank active since the late 70s. Look up "Alternative Ulster". Their 3 chords, 2 minutes, and an attitude have proven to be pretty enduring.

Lastly, I'd echo the sentiment that your dad sounds awesome.
