I was hoping to beat Keith, but living in Hawaii DOES have it's drawbacks, namely shipping a guitar across the ocean takes a while. Thanks to Pete Dubaldo for a great deal and speedy delivery!

The Cutlass arrived in perfect condition and while I only spent a few minutes playing with it, I love it. The neck has a satin finish applied to it but it feels great. It's nothing like traditional finished necks. I have a feeling that EBMM wants these necks to get played a lot and eventually show some wear through, especially on the all maple necks. The neck contour is definitely a soft v at the top and a "c" shape at the higher registers. And while I love the short 4+2 headstock, the longer headstock on the Cutlass gives this instrument a very classic look.

The new trem is smooth. I need to spend more time to take a closer look at how it works. Does the trem cover come off? The stainless steel frets were buttery and I heard that these come with M-Steel strings, although the tag says Regular Slinky. No matter, they're Ernie Ball strings, right?

Out of curiosity, I stood it up next to my homemade "s" type guitar (Korina chambered body) and it was roughly .5" shorter, so very close to an "s" type instrument in length. I often wonder if my Albert Lee sounds different from my strat because of the headstock length, but I digress. The Cutlass body is just about the same size as the homemade "s" type. From the side, the Cutlass was slightly thinner.

That said, I think I need to adjust the action as it seems a bit high out of the case. I did let it sit for a while to acclimate to the Hawaii temperature before tweaking the truss rod to see if it would lower the action a bit. I only have my other EBMMs to compare this to, so I don't know if they set this guitar up differently at the factory but the action does seem a little high for my tastes.

I plugged it in just to make sure everything works. That new silent circuit seems like it works great. I couldn't hear any hum on the 1-3-5 positions. I'll play a bit more with it later on this week. Also, the cases are form fit for the specific instrument AND they include custom decal stating the instrument in the case! I no longer need to put some tape on the case to identify what's inside. Thanks BP and company! :)

And finally, here are the pics!

Congrats on the new guitar! I can't wait to try one.

I'm not sure about everybody else, but I can't see the pics. I just see small coloured squares.

Congrats. That makes me like the sunburst version which wasn´t on my list yet. I lean towards a Cutlass but dunno if I have the money for the EBMM or have to go towards the SBMM... no german pricing seen yet... and want to try it first.

Very nice guitar, kimono. Thanks fo sharing. Do you wanna write some more thoughts when you have played it more? Maybe compare it a bit with the AL? Thanks!

Thanks! I'll see if I can write a bit more once I have some play time on it.

Kimono,

That is a gorgeous top on that one. Congrats!
How does the neck compare to your luke 1 and axis? Shape, finish, fret size etc?

Is there room for a humbucker in bridge position under the pickguard?

Thanks for any info.
Congrats on a real beauty you have there.

Cheers

Let me take the Luke I out and see. As for fret size, it's EBMM standard which I can play but I prefer a taller wider fret wire.

When I change strings I'll take off the pickguard and let you know. I don't think it's routed for humbucker though. I got the wiring diagram from EBMM yesterday so I may put in a single coil humbucker in but I might resist and make this my strat replacement.

It might be fun to pick up a SBMM Cutlass and see how it compares feel wise. That might be fun to route a humbucker into and put a Floyd Rose on, but we shall see.

So tonight I did a little experiment to see if two guitar necks felt similar. I had a hard time doing it with my eyes open so I had my wife hand me the Cutlass and the Luke I while I closed my eyes and I tried to tell them apart. I was mainly trying to feel the back of the neck and nothing else. It was difficult at first. Both Cutlass and Luke I have very similar feel at the first few frets. It was difficult to tell them apart when just feeling in this area. It was only when I felt closer to the middle of the neck that I could tell the difference between the two. The Luke I still has a pronounced "v" shape in the middle of the neck while the Cutlass tapers to a similar feel like a Albert Lee.

While I didn't do a blind test between an Albert Lee or an Axis, I found that this was the best way for me to judge how similar the necks were. It's amazing the information your eyes play on what you think you are feeling.

Thanks so much for the insight. I appreciate you taking the time to do the blind test!

Floyding out and routing for a Humbucker is right up my alley!
Cheers.
