Well, you guys may have remembered I was selling one of my JP7s to fund a 6er and ended up finding a great deal on a swap for this JP6 Trans Black BFR!! Man, I have missed 6 string guitars. I forgot how ridiculously tiny this neck feels! Love it! This is now the 5th EB that I've bought (although I only have 2 at the moment, others are gone) and I can say that I think the quality on this one is the best so far! I was floored by how tight the grain is on the rosewood board on this one. LOVING IT!! Now for the goods:

Weird not seeing ur awesome blue 7 next to that cherryburst but it looks awesome. I know you've wanted a 6 for a bit. Gratz....

At least I still have the picture! Haha! No regrets though, 2 sevenstrings in standard with nothing different except the finish was just pointless for me right now. I guess if I join a band anytime soon with 7s I'd have to get a backup again! Haha!

Awesome man! Looks really familiar! The quilt is a little more pronounced on yours than mine, great find.

Thanks smd! It's a hard finish to photograph too, I took these right at high noon so not sure if that was a bad idea or not but the lighting in my house is awful for taking pics of guitars.

Nice! I have one of those too, and had mixed feelings about the trans black being boring, but they are really gorgeous finishes, especially in the sunlight. I like the shot you have with it next to the cherryburst, they compliment each other, even though the shot with your old blue JP7 was spectacular as well! Enjoy!

Thanks! I'm hoping a different blue finished JP may join my ranks a little later this year! I've gotta fill that void of a blue finished guitar! :D

Nice photos.

I just bought a used JP-6 today with the mystic dream finish. I like the guitar a lot. I was a bit surprised to find out it has a basswood body. I wondered if I should take it back & keep looking for a BFR JP with an alder body? I've always associated basswood with cheaper guitars, e.g. import Fenders.

I would say this base model JP compares sonically with my PRS with carved top & mahogany body, but just wondered why a $1900 guitar doesn't have an alder or ash body.

Nothing wrong with quality basswood. JP6's sound fantastic. There are many Suhrs that cost even more and are basswood and amazing guitars. Enojoy your new guitar and don't worry about what its; made out of.

What Yellow said. Basswood shouldn't be classified as a 'cheap' wood. It has it's own unique tone and sounds great in my opinion. My first EB was a standard Pearl Redburst, it sounded fantastic and was 100% EB quality. True, I do prefer the tone of the Alder BFRs, but there's nothing wrong with a good basswood guitar!

Great find Eric I love the T-Black finish which is one of my all time favorites, and next to the Cherry Burst they make one Dynamic Duo!

Basswood is one of the best tone woods which is why it is the choice of the cream of the crop of Guitar Gods like EVH, JP, Satch, Vai and the list goes on, the only issue is it is ugly and that is why if it does not have a Maple cap will always have a solid finish. If this is the wood some of the greatest ears on the planet want I find that hard to argue with.

I'm not hung up on basswood. I was not familiar with it being used in high end guitars, but again I'm not knowledgeable about Van Halen, Vai, et al preferences. It's usually compared with poplar, which again is used on lower end guitars. I did read on the web last night that basswood became preferred by shredders during the 80s, so ok.

As for JP, if he wants basswood & that is the bomb, I wondered why the BFR guitars use alder. If someone said 'because the tops are figured or carved' then that makes some logical sense. But to say basswood's the best & then the upper end goes to alder for sonic reasons and not for reasons of manufacture or construction, my original question remains.
