NGD: Rescued Axis from local GC, might need a makeover...

Well, with all this Tribute madness going on, I finally broke down and traded some gear and a lil cash for a used Axis at a NJ area GC. It's in Trans Amber, which if I'm being honest, is one of my least favorite colors, and the quilt is not too shabby.

I'm seriously considering a refinish job, though. Any thoughts, opinions, anyone? I already know the finish I wasn't, I really want a trans purple or green job done, I don't know if this is the guitar for it, though. I like a lot of crazy quilt or flame, and I think I might go more solid. Although this color is growing on me. . . I'll have it out at the Red Lion in Manhattan this Fri putting it through the paces, for sure.

I know where you are coming from. The amber is so common on the Axis.

I'm sure most people would be afraid to try a refinish on one of these...they are so perfectly done from the factory.

Better off just buying a green or Purple ! The refin job costs close to $600 when all is said and done with shipping, etc..
I did a Purple EVH and a 25th Anniversary Bass in Trans Purple ................ came out GREAT , however it sounds like you may be very cost conscious about the purchase in the first place, so it may not make sense for you.

Yeah, I'm still on the fence. I am cost conscious, I was actual he en thinking of going candy lime on it, still pondering... Plays great, though. Yeah.the quilt is growing on me,though. Might see how the honeymoon phase plays out and then decide...

I would say if there are no serious dings or nicks (looks like there aren't any from the pic), it's not worth it.

I like it as it is. The grain is hypnotic. Wavy like rippling water, in a way.

Just enjoy it like that for a bit...

Look at it this way. For the price you paid and adding the price of a good refinish job you could just about buy a brand new one of your choice. Play the guitar, get to know it. Keep the guitar and your money, or, if it disagrees with you sell the guitar and use all the money for something that is more to your liking.

Well, cash wise I'm only into it for about $500. The price was $1000, which I traded some gear for half. So I could probably sell this one if I want and put toward another one. I just really like that candy lime green, and I missed out on all the Dargie madness... That spray would be about $500, I guess...

You know that the Axis was never available in Dargie finish, so in my opinion keep it as it is. If it plays well, then enjoy it as it is or try to grab one of the tribute Axis cause there is a lot of fancy colors

I too vote leave it, especially if money is a large factor. Trans amber is a classic and you can always save up some more cash and sell it down the road to buy a new one in whatever colour floats your boat!

That said, the idea of a unique finish appeals to me. Lime-wise I love this trans green. Yes its from a different manufacturer so I have deliberately chosen a pic not showing the headstock to keep things cool.... but man what a nice finish!

Furthermore - opinions? - not liking that lime green at all - it would not make me buy it.
