Yeah, it looked pretty plain-jane, was a tiny bit dissapointed, but with a pearloid pickguard, some wax and wear on the neck, it should be good....it is just so new,....I do prefer the worn in/used look and especially feel.

Maybe the newer ones don't but the older ones definitely do. I currently have a Silhouette & Silhouette Special (& had another Silhouette Special a long time ago) ALL had Maple Necks & are LOADED w/ Birdseye.

Congrats on the new Silo and it sounds like everything is coming together nicely-Enjoy.

As far as figuring on wood a lot of guys seem to have misconceptions about Birdseye, Flame and Quilt when it comes to Maple. This is a really interesting video about wood figuring from a Maple tree that I believe most will find interesting. Though it is from Taylor I do not believe there will be any conflict of interest as they are an acoustic company and the video is about wood not guitars-

Congrats on your new Silo Special! I personaly do not see the point if the neck has a flame or Birdseye. It's on the back of the neck where no one really sees it. Even though my 97 Silo Special has a good amount of flame and Birdseye mixed I could care less. I just play the he!! Out of it!

My 25th has a "plain Jane" neck and has probably the best tone of all 6 of my EBMM's(I know, chambered wood). It's such a versatile guitar that the neck figuring(or lack thereof) doesn't ever bother me.

Yeah, I'm not complaining,...it is about the sound.....I just appreciate wood and the grain, dreaming about one an ASS in of the special editions they announced a few weeks ago, what is it, mahogany body, cherry burst.........played it a little unplugged last night, the neck is a little thinner at the headstock.

That seems to have been a change circa 2000-2002 or so; all of the early Silo Specials (the original ones with the Wilkinson bridge and Grover locking tuners) I ever saw and played had highly figured birdseye necks. Of course by the time I decided to pull the trigger on one they had gone to the plain necks on them - as I mentioned my first one was a 2004 and it had a plain neck.

I have 2 silsp*s..one rosewood, one maple...one is a 2001,the other more recent..they*re both plain janes...very ordinary grain pattern, which I like, and they both play like buttah. My collection of axis sports all have varying degrees of figuration, just what they had in the wood pile at the time ,I guess..The bottom line for me is they all play very well...and maple is a terrific wood.We burn a lot of it in our fireplaces way up north..smells good,too...and if you sqeeze it really hard, you get maple syrop!

Well it only makes sense that the earlier Silos have a higher percentage of figured necks, as EB was not pushing out nowhere near the amount of guitars that they do today and there were also less designs and models. If it means that much to anyone your safest bet is to buy a model already stocked in a store so you can see what you are getting. I am not going to bull sh!t anyone, I love my necks and tops to be insanely figured. Does not always work out that way but given a choice..........

It's always nice to have some figuring on the neck, but ultimately its an aesthetic thing that no one usually sees. I had a Silhouette and a Silo Special both with plain necks. It really did not bother me as the tones coming from the guitars were the most important to me...which were awesome even without birdseye hehe.

If you guys want figuring on your necks, I suggest go and order the PDN Silo Special :D. Roasted maple, and I'm sure there will be some figuring on those. I am rather happy though with my Y2D as it replaced all the other guitars, and the neck actually looks like it is roasted with some nice figuring all over :).

My 2006 Silo Special has a plain maple neck... doesn't make it any less "special" :) Once you play it for a while & your skin's natural oils get worked into the neck, the grain will show more. Enjoy your SS, very versatile guitar!
