The Silent Circuit is a dummy coil - when wired up with a noisy pickup it will cancel out the background noise leaving the signal in tact. It needs a 9V battery, thus the compartment.

$700 would be a good price indeed. Generally the street price depending on options run in the upper $1100's to $1300's.
