I'm personally fond of wide, padded, leather straps. Which rules out EB straps, unfortunately. The width spreads the load really nicely.

I have, and love, one of these:

Levy's, 4.5" wide, padded.

Available at the usual-suspect large Interwebnet music retailers for about $50.

Thanks for the kind words about my straps, Dan. My name is Ray Hatley and I make the Barefoot Leather custom straps personally.

Just a few thoughts seeing as you asked: there is always going to be a place for a strap like those you see at Ernie Ball. They are well designed, made in quantity and look great. They give great service and if that is all you need then you don't need me.

My straps are the other end of the spectrum. Each strap is individually hand-made from top-grain leather. All the leather is selected personally and I cut (any width you like) and tool the strap to suit the client. I can also line it, pad it or leave it plain. An operation like Ernie Ball doesn't have the resources to do this stuff - and lets face it the profits aren't huge on guitar straps anyway - so they concentrate on selling good quality, factory produced items.

I can't compete with EB's prices but I can certainly produce a strap that is both unique and customised to suit the purchaser - with the name of their band, stage name or whatever they want embossed onto the strap and the whole thing hand dyed to suit an individual guitar.

Like I said, we both have a place in the world and I don't believe we overlap enough to trouble each other. I make and sell less than ten custom straps a week but I send them all over the world whilst EB sells that many and more every day. All YOU have to do is decide what you want from a strap and then order the right one.

Hope this helps,

Ray

Thank you all for you sugestions and imput.
Im still working out design of the strap that im looking for an a custom order from http://www.barefootleather.co.uk/ will be whare i will be going on this one.
My Stingray is a beautiful bass and it took a lot of getting hold of (buying/traiding in saving up etc) to get hold of so its only rite that the strap that you hold it with compliments the guitar so a custom order made to you specifacation is only rite for sutch a beautiful guitar, and with any luck that strap will still be with me on my next stingray or (an :D) bongo. because if brought right, and you dont lose it/ get it stolen etc... its the sort of thing that you only need to purchace once.
(and as far as gaffer tape goes to strap a boot lace to it with goes ...... no coment) red sause all over a gaumet meail springs to mind.
Just want to compliment the guitar in a fasion it deserves.
