I said it once and I'll say it agian. You can try and resist the lure of a Bongo, but its no use. There's no way to go on playing bass and not want a Bongo, especially if you decide to hang out here.
Hopefully by tommorrow my Sterling will be here and I will have completed the "Classic Trio"-Stingray-Stingray5-Sterling. I'm guessing the Bongo will be next.No single H for me though. If I get a Bongo i'm going all the way Baby! 5-String,Dual H,4-Band EQ and Piezo if possible.......

if you're going to dis the Bongo can you change your name to pan_of_nsw?:) Of course I'm only joking, but you should check one out the tone is unbelievable. Where in Brisbane are you, as maybe I could organize one for you to try out?

hehe . . I was expecting some clues on why the Bongy appeals.
I don't think playing one would be a good idea just yet as I still have most of the SR5 on the credit card. No doubt some dark magic at work here . . .

Bongles don't seem to appear on tv much either?

I seriously don't get your point at all? You prefer the look of the SR5 over the Bongo, and still you obviously think about getting one, stopped only by you still being in debt after purchasing the SR5?

Enjoy your SR5 and stop worrying about not understaning the Bongo.

Thats gonna be one hell of a trio. You're gonna love the Sterling its easily the most comfortable bass ever.

pan_of_gld obviously has not been exposed to the Bongo Mind Control Rays yet.

Just go play one. That's all it takes.

You will be assimilated.

Is there a more tired thread than " i don't get the bongo?"

Nope. Everyone at Harmony Central seems to have finally "gotten" it-it seems like everybody's getting one now that I got mine. Before, you couldn't even mention Bongos on the HC bass forum without getting booed into submission.

It's a wonderful thing.:)

Bongos don't look that bad when seen in action. Witness the Cowpilot gig pics. Maybe Jack just makes them look good. I mean, compared to him....
+1

So the nicest thing you can say is "don't look that bad" .... and that's only when partly obscured by the player. Pretty much what I've been saying all along. I dig the sound and still don't dig the looks even though my next Boingo would be my 3rd. Specifically, what I been saying is not to get hung up on how it looks hanging by itself. It's meant to be played, not displayed, and on stage it looks, well, no better actually, but less obvious, less in-your-face, and not the focus of your attention.

In a way, on stage it DOES look better, even you intentionally keep an eye on it. It has a shape that looks really dumbast standing still, but in motion, it looks halfway decent. I'm not talking now about distraction. I mean it seems really meant to be viewed as an element of action, not a static piece of sculpture on display.

None of this denies that an ax ought to look good parked on a stand as well as in use, and in static display, the Boingo is a solid looooozer. But nothing else sounds like that, so get one [or a six pack] and just don't let it sit idle.

BTW, certain pickguards on certain color finishes make a Boingo look twice as worst as necessary. IMNSHO, white PGs exagerate a Boingo's sculpting, as do black PG on some of the brightest and lightest colors.

The other thing to keep in mind is that nearly all criticism of the Boingo's shape is from other bassers, and mostly limited to online. Offline, even with the white PGs, my Boingos are big hits, visually and sonically, with other bassers, with other players, and with fans.

It's really a mostly imaginary problem. Put your Boingo on a stand near a couch. Sit in a chair with a yellow pad. Run over to lie down on the couch and gripe about how uglee the Boingo looks. Run back to the chair, tap your pen on your yellow pad, and ask the couch "and how does that make you feel?" Do this every tueday afternoon at 2pm. It really works.

Y'know, I have a feeling that back in the early 50s when Fender introduced the Telecaster, P and J basses, the mainstream players (who all had uprights) were having much the same reaction/discussion....

+1!

Been looking for a polite but direct way to get to that very point. Awesome summation and good point.

The way I get to the point is not one single person has had anything but compliments for my Bongo 5 H.
If you really don't like it treat it like spinach or something else you won't eat. Don't order it.

Yeah, but they had to do it via teletype on absurdly low-speed connections :)
