Amp Settings

OK, I checked out what I had the knobs on my bass and amp set for. I know an SVT is going to sound different from a 4004, but I think the basic levels should be similar, just not the overall volume. On the amp I set the bass boost button on, treble boost off, bass control at 1:00, Mids flat (using middle position on shape control), treble at 11:00. Volume at noon. On the Sterling I had the treble down a quarter, the mids up about half, and the bass up an eighth (just cracked). This cut through (we didn't mike anything except the kick) really well, but it also allowed the speakers to load and couple with the room so's the wall's were shakin' (as was a lot of booties, gotta love it). Now we were playing "classic rock", a mixture of whatever we thought fit, from Zep to Beatles to Heart and Janis. I think this kind of music needs lots of good old SVT thunder, but my back-up amp is an Eden WT-400 and I have no doubt that it would also provide all the low end needed for a real good time into the 4-ohm load of an SWR 2X10 and 1X15, also at 400 watts (like the 4004). I guess what I'm trying to say here, as gently as possible, is it may be time to get the amp checked out. After careful, although subjective analysis, that's the only thing I can come up with for your problem. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

more suggestions?

You could get rid of your SWR. Take the SR to a guitar store and try out a few that might compliment your bass. It might get rid of your headache. Good luck!

i would have gotten rid of the swr if it was mine to get rid of. it's a decent amp, but not quite my taste. but really, it was anything more than i could afford, so yeah.

i guess i'll just have to fiddle more...

I play through a SWR Silverado Special (2x12)stacked on a SWR Triad (15x12xh) and it is picky. As a matter of fact, all of my SWR gear has been really picky. When I have the settings nailed the tone is awesome, but if something is slighly off it is off big time. It is taking the time to get to know your gear and its relationship with your bass. It took me 4-5 days of just knob tweaking when I ditched my Warwicks for my set of Bongos. Just flatten everything out and start playing with each knob until you know exactly how it shapes your sound, then move on to the next one. It is tedious, but when it works, it really works.

I really like the tone of my SRs through my SWR Super Redhead. Different strokes...

Pete,
I'm also pleased w/my super redhead but that aural enhancer,
if turned on/up, KILLS low end. I used to use it all the time
& always had trouble getting decent lows. Turning off the
horn & cutting mids/highs didn't help. Turned off the AE and
BAM, got my tone.

I don't use the aural enhancer either. The amp sounds great pretty flat, with a slight 800 hz mid cut, and a slight low boost.

Agreed :)
Just curious if you're using the horn; if so, how much?

Is it bad that I get a great deal of satisfaction from that statement??

It was one of those sad moments... I was playing out on New Years and Kermit was my main bass. I had to switch to the Warwick for a few alternate tuning songs and the joy just wasn't there. I loved the bass. Loved the way it looked, played and sounded... but when it was A/B'ed against my Bongo there was no comparrison... none! Anything I could do with the Warwick I could do and exceed with the Bongo (I won't complain about the lack of sparkle finishes... BUT a natural finish would be nice - I know... "basswood" but ash would be awesome on a Bongo and has been done from what I've heard). I knew right then its (the Warwick) days were numbered  So I sold it and have brought a shinny new Bongo into my home. :D

I've got the attenuator for the horn at the half way mark. I like a pretty bright tone.

And can I say to you others out there who have been ragging relative noobs (both to this Forum & MM Basses) in recent threads to lay off a little?

I understand & share your passion for the instrument we're all here to discuss, but you're being too defensive. Remain objective and our new guys will appreciate your positive, constructive feedback. That way they'll stay here & add to the 'gene pool'.

I agree. Some of you are breaking the balls of every new member we get. Give it a freakin' rest. If N*ck comes back, the n break his balls. Otherwise grow up.

It's amazing what the internet does for some people's egos vs. the real world. I think some of you would get your ass kicked if you spoke to someone on the street the way you do on here.

I agree with this statement, however, I don't see any poor mouthing in this thread.

True. I was referring to some of the shortness in this thread noticed by myself and a few others. The "other" comments I made were referring to some of the more recent threads posted by new members. Some of the members here have been d*cks.

Well you are certainly correct that newbies are easy targets -- in all forums and newsgroups. I think this might stem from the fact that there is so much trolling, and people get defensive. We should give everyone here the benifit of the doubt, though, and take the high road whenever possible.

I just think excessive ball breaking on newbies looks bad for us and EB. It is, afterall, a forum hosted on their website.

Like Big Poppa said last week, out of 1,000's of members only about 50 are regulars. Some of the "non-regular" members get carried away. Pay yo dues sucka!! :D
