I think the production on the 3 new tracks they released on Best of Both Worlds was the worst in VH history.

Ironically, those were the first tracks in VH history that were entirely engineered by Ed! I agree about VH3. It was darker and deeper, and in places touched on Pink Floyd! But I admire themfor trying something so different and it should have been given a better chance to fly. The live bootleg from Sydney in the VH3 tour is simply superb.

I know DLR will never return,but things seemed so good in 96 when hearing the 2 new tracks they recorded (in absurd conditions according to Dave in "Crazy From The Heat"). It was like they had never split up. Those two tracks, IMHO, mark the absolute perfect Van Halen. If only they'd given it a chance.

As for Sammy, in all honesty I think he's far better now as a solo artist than he ever was. I can see him not really caring if things go on with VH as he has a stunningly tight band with some great music to play. He has teh least to lose.
 
If EVH would straighten up (read: sober), and lighten up I think things could be good for them. They don't even need to tour at this point. Just record.

I have a feeling though EVH is gonna be another rock star fatality one of these days. He just seems to have that very self destructive streak in him.

I'd love to see them do a little project with some new tracks by all the singers. I liked the Cherone album too... wasn't too keen on the production value of it, or the vocals on "How many say I", but overall I liked it.

Ed has squandered his massive talent , and not just as a guitarist but as an all around musician (composer etc.) on substance abuse.

Just a side note about Michael - what a great bass line he laid down on Diver Down's "Hang 'Em High", especially during Eddie's solo.

Michael and Alex were definitely a team that (few could argue) had the balls in their court!
 
just wanted to chime in and pay my respects to VH cause im a Van Halenite.

Yeah, but you have to bear in mind that Ed and Al already had a bass player, and drafted Michael into the band after seing him in action several times in competing bands.

Skill, not so much as luck, had something to do with his tenure.
 
Wasn't there an Eddie interview a couple of years ago where he talked about being hounded at all hours of the night by Dimebag who would phone him to try and coax Ed into getting his **** together? I know that might have played a part in the VH tour last year but.....Ed still needs to get his **** together. The world needs more Ed. And more guitar players who are instantly recognizable as soon as you hear their first note. I miss ED. I can still listen to "I'm the one" and get blown away by Ed's passion and style. Nobody attacked the strings like Ed. It's like he was using the edge of a knife for a pick.
 
Like it was mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread (I'm pretty sure), their best days are wayyy behind them.

Back on the first three albums, Van Halen were as hungry as a band could be for success, and you couldn't touch Eddie's playing (let alone Alex and Michael's) with a ten foot Kramer!

Fair Warning (Eddie's best sound, with VH1 right behind it), Diver Down (their best all-around sounding album), and 1984 also kicked ass! That was raw Van Halen!

This isn't knocking the Sammy-era; that had it's cool points, too. But we are talking about vintage (read: kick-ass) Van Halen here.

hate to say it, but david l. roth brought something out in those guy's that made them rock.eddie needs to break out the early albums and say oh yeah,i can really shred when i'm having fun........get back to it eddie.
 
I saw them live, in early March of '78, VH opened for Journey on the Evolution tour (it was opener VH, then Ronnie Montrose, then Journey).

Great show. This was right before Running with the Devil was released nationally.

I think MA is a very good bass player.


BTW, I read in the paper recently that Ed and Valerie split after 24 years of marriage.
 
Is it just me, or when DLR sang about sex, it was in a 'naughty immature junior high locker room jokes' sort of way WHEREAS when Sammy sang about sex, it was 'that weird creepy old guy at the mall wearing the trench coat that mamma warned you not to go near' sorta way?

One guy made the subject devilish frat-boy fun, the other just made it disturbing.

As a big fan of VH and Extreme, the VH3 album disappointed me on many levels. I may have to go back and revisit it, however, judging from the positive comments on here.

Just my 2 cents.
 
horrible sound

i saw them years ago with d.l.r. man they sounded like ****. it was an insult. it's like they did not even give a damn. i'm a big old school v.h. fan but that pissed me off. eddie need's to get back to his root's, and remember to have fun again, that's when he rocks.just my opinion.
 
At least we have recordings of old Van Halen. Kinda sucks that a couple guys can't get over their egos long enough to get paid millions to play rock and roll to thousands of adoring fans willing to pay $75 per ticket to see them.

Ed's the one who got me to discover EBMM as well. I just had enough money saved up to buy a EVH guitar when he and EBMM split in 95/96, so I bought a first year Axis and still have it. I get too caught up in the band and what Ed's doing but I do owe it to him for introducing me to EBMM.

My goal like many others is to own at least one of each. After scouring the catalogs/internet there is no other brand that I'd rather own.
