High voltage, baby

That would explain the hair.

I've got two Bongos with single coils. Some of the dives that I play cause more hum than others. I can usually find a direction that I can point the bass to make the hum go away, but truthfully it doesn't really matter once the songs start.

It's been awhile since I had an HS Bongo but my recollection is that there's an adjustable humcancelling coil in the control cavity. Open it up and get the noise going then fiddle with the trim pot until the noise is gone.
Man, I didn't see your post. I'll try fiddle with the trim pot in the garage tonight. I hope, this is it!

Hmmm. I do get a bit of noise with my SR5 HS at times. the only REALLY silent position is 5, with the hidden coil + the single. All the rest get some degree of hum, though it sounds more like EMF interference than mains hum.

What does one use to clean the 5 way switch? It is a bit noisy when changing positions.

I managed to get some of the hum away using the trim pot of the silent circuit but there's still some left.
Too bad the garage has so mush EMF interference (due to the electrical wiring I suppose) since that's where we practice...

Thanks everyone and especially bdgotoh for the tip.
