So, almost everyone one of us puts something in the back of the amp at one time or another. From power cords (no, not even power cords? Come on, let's be honest here!) to microprocessor based pedals and yes, even hard drive iPods. Maybe it is not a good idea but it happens.

I assumed that the strong magnetic field would have a more damaging effect than a stray puncture to the speaker cone (isn't that the tone alot of us look for?!) but I don't recall any OFFICIAL written suggestions or warnings regarding speaker magnets in guitar cabinets to microprocessor based pedals, loopers, etc.

What is the EMF truth?

OT...I know. Where would this question go in this particular forum? I have a new EBMM guitar. That must count for something. I have more respect for yous guys due to the level of commitment just to get into this forum and it's guitars.

Thanks a ton.
Yes, I even played my Telebastard yesterday!

I'd never really thought about it. I'd never really put anything in the back of an amp unless it came to me from the factory like that (e.g., footswitches, cords, etc) with the exception of some guitar cords. Oh yeah...I did put an old Boss ME-5 in the back of a F3nd3r amp I had. That's about it. Now, I use tube amps. So, I wouldn't want something bouncing around in there and breaking something. So, again, I only put in there what the manufacturer (in my case Mesa) had put in there. They have stuff to tie down cords and a bag for the footswitch. So, it's easy to secure stuff.

I confess that I've thrown more stuff in there than should have been, but that was before I started using NOS tubes and after market speakers. Also after brain surgery. It's not a good idea. Now, I store the power cable and that's it.

The power cord and maybe a guitar cable is really the only things I'll put in my amp for transportation.

My Orange PPC2x12 is closed in the back. Helping me protect me from myself.

If it isn't permanently attached (like some power cables are) or there's not a specific velcro holder for something....surely nothing should ever go in the back of a combo.

Damaged speakers or disconnected speaker wires could kill a tube amp's output transformer....and all for the sake of buying a $10.00 sports bag!

I'm not really a combo kinda guy, but of the couple that I do use I really like that Laney put steel grilles across the back to prevent you putting junk in there....smart thinking if you ask me!!!!

Just my 2 cents....

Steve.

To answer the original question. The speaker magnet will not harm any electronic device but I would be cautious with microphones and credit cards :)

Thanks!

All this is the kind of information I was looking for.

Mostly I stick cords and books in there back and forth to practice. OK, my line6 also carries my drummer, too (drum machine that our live drummer absolutely hates!). My goal was to make one trip to the car. I see the error in my ways and will strive to change. I'll bet I could get my Fender in the back, though...

Not as expected: microphones.

Expected : no one has mentioned microprocessors or flash based devices.

My amps used to get a lot of rash from dragging in and out of the trunk. I ordered a cover from "studioslips" that has a huge pocket in the back. Presto, I can carry the amp and and a couple of pedals, cords, etc. in one fell swoop. Have 'em for my amp head and combo.

I never put things in the back of my amp when I transport it, as I keep all my leads in suitcase. When I gig, I use the back of my amp to keep my ipod, keys, wallet etc from going missing. I have done this for some time, and the Ipod appears still to be going strong!

If you get an AER acoustic it comes in a bag that looks like a "fishing tackle box" - loads of pockets to carry just about everything.

My Marshall I put the power cord and have flyers from ols gigs I played.

Monty B makes a good point about mesh on the back.
The Mesa F50 I'm getting has the some mesh but I'm taking it off so I can unplug the footswitch !
