I love to slap, and am trying to improve my slap skills, but the the sound hardly ever fits into a hard rock/metal jam with my friends. Mostly I use my fingers, and sometimes I end up using a pick especially if there is only one other guitarist. Sometimes I kick on some OD while the guitar is soloing. You know, it all depends. Get creative and try to make it work. My goal of a jam is for all of us to sound good. When I practice by myself I most definitely slap a lot. I wouldnt have bought my 'Ray if it couldn't do everything that I wanted.

Tried for many years to master that style. Level 42 was one of my favorite bands in the 80s -90s( Ok, I still listen to them). Just doesn't work well for me. I slap in a couple songs we play but thats it. Finger style works best for me. Love that MM growl!

Why must you lie, Jack?

You funky-ass bastard. When Jack slaps his bass a woofer moves in Fort Worth.

Someone recently said MM Basses are mainly basses for slap technique.
Though true, I'm a non-slapper. I play pretty much traditional technique on my StingRay 5H. Pluck finger style over the pickup.
Curious how many other MM players are non-slappers or don't slap less than say 50% of the time?

I'm an "almost non-slapper" too. I currently play in a cover band and only have one song (among 60) where I have some slap work. Since I've been in this band, I have been through two other (non-MM) basses, and everyone in the team agrees the SR5 is the one that fills the whole gig job the best.

I don't slap... never had the urge to learn, don't particularly listen to bands that predominantely slap, and don't know that I'd have the coordination if the mood struck me. The bandleader of one of my current gigs is pressing me to learn though....
