For any of you sky watchers out there, there have been two recent solar flares lately. The first hit earth over the weekend and triggered an impressive auroral display visible as far south as Scotland and Northern Ireland. The sun then unleashed another one, which while not coming directly at us was ten times bigger and should also produce very impressive displays. There is a fair chance of auroral activity even at mid latitudes over the next 24-48 hours. If you have a clear sky, look to the north.

Check out spaceweather.com for more info.

My grandmother, who was already very old in 1969, had no idea that men had walked on the moon and for a few days refused to believe it. She was pretty sure we were yanking her chain. She grew up quite poor and was a farmer's wife in rural Mississippi. She was tough! But she wasn't up on current events.

Anyway, she finally asked what day it was that this had happened. We told her whatever it was, four or five days earlier, and this was what she said: "Well, I thought the weather had been a bit QUEER since then."
