I have been using Not Even Slinkys for about 2 months for playing around, and have noticed that the G-string gives off a somewhat oscillating sound whenever it is played, either open or anywhere on the fretboard. I have used these strings in the past, and love the way they play, and I remember the G-string doing the same thing, but I have had the guitar setup by a tech and figured it'd just go away. I've scoured the internet and checked around on here, but no one seems to have this problem. I found one guy on musician's friend who complained about the G string sounding off, but that's about it. For a quick background on my guitar, it's an Ibanez GRX20, Drop-D and Air Norton pickups, sperzel 6 in-line tuners, and stock bridge. It's a floating bridge, which I have screwed in to the body to make it a "fixed" bridge. I love the strings, but I really wish I could get this trivial problem fixed. Thanks a ton!

The not even slinky is for drop tuning beyond d...a 24 p is not going to sound that great when tuned to "a" the 24 is just to think to vibrate at that tension. Rtry beefy slinkys

well, I usually play in standard C on it, but I've noticed that ANY tuning I put it in the G gives me that awkward sound. I know it can't be the strings cause Petrucci uses them, and there's no way he would let the G-string give off such a bizarre sound. I thought about adjusting the pole piece on the G, but figured that wouldn't do anything but give it more bite. I guess the closest comparison I can give is when you strike the low E really hard, and it bounces from a higher pitch until it rests back at E. Sorry if I'm being confusing, it's pretty difficult to describe.

I guess you need to figure out if what Im telling you is right. Iam asking that you trust me. A .024 Plain as a a or bflat is not going to sound as good. That is a very thick plain string....Once you get to c tuning and those stiringsit will not sound the same as a .016 tuned to g.........THats eight thousands difference and you are only going down two steps at the most. You needecd to find the gauge that gives you what you want at your pitch and the .024 is the worng one...try making a custom set out of a gauge box....start by trying the 22p or the 20p and building from there

I noticed the same problem, although I downtune to B, thus tuning b, F#, D, A, E, B , and the G-string (tuned to D) also resonates really "off". Anyone know of a string-set that will sound proper?

First of all read this BP's post:

I've set up "Not Even Slinky" for B E A D F# B tuning. And change plain 3rd string" (24p) to wound one (24w).
It's harder to bend but IMHO sound better than a plain string.
You can try 22w (wound), too.

Yup, i've done the same thing. It would be nice if Ernie Ball did what Dean Markley does, they put both wound and unwound G strings in the same package. I tried Dean Markleys, but they don't last as long and they break too often. That's why im sticking with Ernie Ball

G-string trouble

I have 2 guitars both set up in dropped C (C-G-C-F-A-D). I use Beefy Slinky's but replace the 22p with a 22w. It made a world of difference when I did this. If I was to tune in dropped B (B-F#-B-E-G-C) or standard B (B-E-A-D-F#-B), I would do the same thing but using Not Even Slinky's and replacing the 24p with a 24w. Good luck.
