I leave a beater out on a stand that anyone can play. My 1 yr old daughter routinely knocks it over so she can strum the strings (she loves playing with it), and I'm happy for visitors to pick it up and play.

The balls are safe in the basement :)

I used to keep a guitar around that was a "fair game" guitar... meaning anyone at anytime could pick it up and play it without me sweating. My EBMM and high end guitars would remain in the case and would just keep the "fair game" guitar out and a practice amp near by that was solid state that could just be beat up and abused...
this is an inexpensive option to dealing with grief and frustration...

I understand that someone is rigorous to keep guitars clean and tuned. But broken neck will be a bigger problem.

I let my both sons (4 and 1,5 years) that they can touch and strum the guitar while it is in stand. This is the best way to build relationship to a guitar. To a musical instrument. And they both know that this is all that they are allowed to do.
I'm not afraid about fingerprints. Cause those are from my sons, my blood.
I'm using guitar as a musical instrument not as a work of art. Even though MM guitars are beautiful and No.1 guitars.

Anyway this is may point of view. And in my family it works.

Judge me. :)

I agree with this whole heartedly as it's important to encourage your kids.... my sons (same ages funnily enough) touch and strum all my guitars, EBMM, PRS, Fender, even my Collings, but typically only in my presence. For the rest of the time the guitars hang safely up on the wall and are, for now, out of reach. When I'm not around there's always my old Yamaha acoustic sitting in a floor stand that often receives some welcome baby relicing!

I leave the cheaper guitar out (think....manufactured somewhat south of SLO). Anything else is in a case, in the back of a closet or under a bed or in some other hiding place that even I forget.

4. air horns

There's something not right when one either agrees to take your guitar down when guests and their kids are over and lets them play with it. Even worse if it was her idea. Fortunately, it seems that this has been addressed.

This is why I always keep mine in their cases when not being played. With two small kids at home, leaving them out is just asking for trouble.

That´s why you have to teach your kids to play guitar when they´re young!

And I´m glad that nothing happened to the guitar!

Are you guys newlyweds? I guess you haven't had "the talk" yet.......you might want to. I don't keep my guitars on display, would like to, but the case is not only safer but the strings last longer, and the humidy doesn't affect the instrument like it would being on the wall.
I came home yesterday from walking my dog to find my wife at home with her friend and kids. She had taken my ASS off the wall to let them mess around with it, i assume to keep them, quiet.

Imagine my horror as i walked in to see a couple of 5 years olds banging away on it with sticky fingers.
I had to restring and clean it as there were sticky prints everywhere, i think i need to invest in a safe with fingerprint recognition.

I politely explained that this is a very expensive instrument and the response i got was..."it doesn't look anything special"

I held my tongue and took the dog out for another walk, at least he was happy.

Some of my guitars are out. My daughter is 6 and she knows not to touch them unless I'm with her. It's funny, when she has friends over she instructs them not to touch the guitars because they are "dad's" and we can't let anything happen to them. She will come and get me and ask me to move a guitar if she thinks it will be in anywhere near the action. I taught her well.

Your wife thought it was ok to let someone kids play with a high end guitar? Wow! That would not go over well in my house. Well it would never happen. My wife won't even touch my guitars. My 5 year old neice is allowed to strum on the $50 Epi acoustic on the stand when she comes over and that's it. It goes without saying the ones hanging on the wall are off limits.

Like beej I always have a beater out and about in the house leaning against the wall. The fact is that guitars are like magnets to kids and I cant blame any kid for wanting to grab it. The adult in the house should of been a little more responsible, next time bring the kids over to play in the shoe closet lol.

I have shown my good wife these posts and she is suitably apologetic. It will not happen again, it was just a silly mistake that thank goodness did not end badly.
