I'm sure this has been talked about countless times on the forum, but I can't find any threads on it now(even with a search.. but i could have missed something ), so I will ask away.


What are the tonal differences of an SR4H and a Bongo 4H? I'm considering buying a bongo to be my second bass with my SR4H. Will they sound different enough to justify swapping basses depending on the song? or will the bongo just be a suitable back up?

Oh and for the record, the nearest GC is 3 hours away and they never have Bongos when I get up there, so I can't just run try one out.

huge difference.

Stingray 9 Volts preamp alnico pickup, 3 band eq - nothing sounds like a Stingray.

Bongo 18 Volts preamp Neodimium pickup 4 band eq - nothing sounds like a Bongo.

The Bongo will definitely have a more easily identifiable difference in look, feel, and sound than another Stingray as a second bass.

There is definitely a lot of overlap in the way the instruments fill out the frequency range, but they have their own distinct voices. That difference will be less noticeable in a full band setting, but there will be an audible difference (sadly, no one in the audience will notice, though, as the band will still be served by the instrument). I bet people (ie girls) mention the Bongo more than the Stingray, though. My Bongos have elicited more comments over the years than any of my other basses ever did.

You can't underestimate the difference in look, feel, and mojo between the two, either. I don't have time to swap out basses apart from set breaks, but I always take two Musicman basses to gigs. They each provoke different interests when I play them and I enjoy changing things up. Granted, I'm using fretted and fretless, and rounds and flats.



Options are good, and a Bongoloid is never going to say NOT to buy one...

Lipped up and said yeah but not g compares
To your Bongo.....
I sold it a few weeks ago to pay for the new bass
It was a bongo HH
So my suggestion would be get a HH bongo I'd
You want it to be different than hour sr h

And on. Side note if anyone is sell g a bongo

Yes, thanks for correcting me, I had totally forgotten that particular. Still the pickups and the 18 volts preamp are a complete different thing and the two (Sray vs Bongo) will not sound the same in any shape or form.

that and the singleH has its pickup in the SR sweet spot, where as the 2 pup models have the bridge pickup closer to the bridge.

I decided to get the bongo 4H... desert gold

Should get it next week.

I really wanted to get a SR4HH or a bongo 4HH, but finding a decent used one in a color I could stand was near impossible. Getting the 4H just lets me talk the wife into another bass around Christmas

The reason I didn't hold out longer, my beloved 'ray needs to be sent back to slo for some fret work. And maybe a custom paint job just before that
