Not Your Usual Rosewood vs Maple Post

Hello,

Newbie here. I am seriously buying a MM with P90s (ok M90s, whatever). I have had an Axis Sport before, a righty (I'm lefty). Maple fretboard. I destroyed it. I still cry over it.

Anyways, this has a Rosewood fretboard. Which seems unusual, since the ads say that MM uses Maple with their M90 version of the Axis Super Sport.

Now I had a Maple as I said. Loved it to death. Only thing wrong with it was it wasn't a lefty. M90's ROCK.

Now I am getting my lefty, but it's Rosewood. Hmmm. Decisions decisions.

I've read all the forums and see the "It's Perception", or "Maple is Brighter".

Tell me I won't be disappointed, and explain why they aren't using the usual Maple (since they seem stuck on, what, Swamp Ash for the body or something for M90s?) Why Why Why?

I'm about to get my first maple fretboard guitar in over 30 years of playing!
An albert Lee which only comes with maple fretboard.

I've got a axis ss with mm90's with a rosewood fretboard. Some of 'em come with maple depending on I think color of guitar. or if you order one, selecting one or the other.

Have you ever played an SS P90 with Maple?

In truth, I do home studio work. So many times I'm going through a PodXt, which will probably negate any possible difference anyways.

Only once at ernie ball booth at last years namm show. They had a beautiful quilted cherry burst with ivory mm90's and a maple fretboard. One of the best looking guitars I've ever seen.

They had testing stations set up with tiny Korg pandora units. So it was hard to do a comparison.

I use Line 6 pod and flextone II's so I agree that you'll be able to get the sound you want.

The Axis ss with mm90's comes set up from the factory with 10's. I put 9's on mine. It's what I like. The axis ss with humbuckers comes set up with 9's from factory.

There was a guy during the summer here selling one brand new like the one mentioned above with piezo bridge for around $1200. Someone got a very nice guitar that one.

I can either wait for a lefty on ebay, which usually come once every 2 months or so, and for 700-850 get one with a chip or two.

New, so far, I can only find one as cheap (an axis super sport mm90s) with a case for 1270.

I saw in the fall a new axis sport for 1000 which I should have snatched up, but thought I could fix mine. The one I destroyed. But a new neck is 300 from the company, probably 60-80 bucks shipping both ways, and the body needs finishing which will take me 2 months (don't have the time) and I'd have to solder everything back BERFORE sending it off for the neck.

So I may just sell it for pieces. I want a lefty anyways.

I've been in that store. it's about 60 miles from me. Very private with all their guitars stashed in cases. Many high end pieces. They seem like good guys. They had a white Luke with piezo that I was looking at and test drove. But ended up ordering one in vin sunburst from company instead.

There's a couple guys here who are dealers. Pete Dubuldo and Bassplyr (doug).
You might want to see if they can work out a deal you'll be happy with.

One advantage is no tax if it comes from another state. I'm waitng on the Albert Lee ordered from DOUG in IL. Koogie also just got in a new JP from doug.

And several people including OC have been very happy with PETE.

Looks like that MM has been SOLD. I bought my Desert Gold JP from WildWest...it;s still on their site....hehe.

I wouldn't worry about it, cz... I've got a Super Sport and a Sport with MM90s and rosewood fretboards. I've got the Albert Lee MM90 as well with its maple board. If I'm pulling them out side-by-each and rotating them I can hear that each guitar has its own tone, but they're not so different that I couldn't use any one in place of the other two (except perhaps for the in-between positions on the AL). The biggest difference a rosewood board makes - imho - is cosmetic...

BTW, its says SOLD cause I bought it.

Although, I could technically cancel it. And they have a 2 day period to check it out with a 10% restocking fee.

I am tempted to wait for a deal, BUT I've gone too long without my musicman, AND waiting/ordering will take 2-3 months.

To tell you the truth, I'd be less tempted if Musicman had a real Warranty.

I don't see anyone posting problems with them like EVER, but...

Why the crappy warranty? Gretsch give a lifetime, and their quality is ok.

I have read many a times where they (EBMM) have gone above and beyond to make sure we are happy. I'd vouch for them at any time.

Just think of Chrysler when they were dishing out their 7 year warranty, why, because they had to...I fail to see the need for a warranty beyond 1 year, even that seems a bit much, especially with EBMM's...my 96 Silo is as soilid as a rock, electronically it sounds like a banshee trying to escape its shackels

I hear ya.

When I told them about my dismembered axe, they said to send in the body and they'd make sure the new neck fit, and set it up.

No one seems to do that kind of thing.

As for a warranty past a year, I don't think electronics need to be covered beyond that. But I've had 2 guitars that had frets just pop up after cold/heat (nothing extreme, just a cars trunk in winter to the house)

One was my Gretsch, and the local dealer fixed it no problem.

But more than actually fixing merchandise, a warranty to me is sort of an advertisement for quality. Yamaha Clavinovas give a long warranty, as do, say, Toyotas, and both have a well deserved long life reputation.

I wonder if MM did an analysis on the return factor versus the reinforced quality perception?
