Keith - it's a great accolade for the AL guitar when someone who has experienced playing the whole range gravitates towards the AL.
A little OT - but last night I played in a jam night as a warm up for some gigs coming up. A great Cardiff Guitarist called Pete Matheson (who played with Ray Davies from the Kinks) ask to once again use my guitar. He played it for a few numbers and I was lucky enough to play bass in another couple of numbers for him. He said that he wasn't quite sure about it the last time but he REALLY enjoyed it last night. Als Rule !!!

if only I could get one...

but the question to you is how the coil tap is implemented? is it a 5 switch or a 3 way switch? when you coil tap the guitar which coil is used?

3, looking at the schematic, it's a 3 way switch with the push/pull on the volume pot. It's splitting the neck pup from the looks of it. So my guess would be that it gives it a Tele type of sound.

I might just try this on mine someday, that's someday, too many other things to do first.

Glenn.....no tap on the bridge? It's an easy mod to do....going into the tone knob and well worth it. I've done the push-pull on my Axis, but of course that's only one knob, so I coil split both.

Keith, so inspired I re-wired my HH AL today and put in a coil split in the same way. Had an extra Silent Circuit kicking around so it's engaged in the split positions so there's no hum. Fun stuff.

Glenn-

I haven't seen the official schematic for that, but the coil split would just be a push/pull DPDT in conjunction with the usual 5-way switch on the HH AL. The way they've done it will give you a split humbucker (i.e. single coil only) in the bridge or neck position, without affecting the other switch positions. You get typical single coil sounds in a non-noiseless configuration.

Easiest way to do this is to ground the lower half of each coil, basically giving you the outside coil (so closest to the bridge or closest to the neck). You could do it with inside coils but it would be more of a pain. You could also do some other cool stuff like add in a resistor to approximate 250k controls, making it less bright. (I opted for a Silent Circuit install b/c I hate hum.)

(Btw ... the right term here is really "split" and not "tap". Tap traditionally applies when you add a piece of wire to a p'up that didn't have it before ... you "tap" it. In this case the hbs have two coils so we are just "splitting" them using the exiting wires.)

Ah yah ok, I see where I made my mistake. Yah I was thinking it was splitting and not tapping, I had just read about tapping recently.

Thanx Glenn |B)

Glad I could inspire someone beej, so how do you like it? I know I have been using bad terminology but I love the added tones!!

Wow that color is awesome on the AL!

Thansk Pete it is a nice color on the HH AL and well my pics do it no justice.

Beautiful new acquisition Keith
(as an aside, check your PMs. thanks)

Hah! No bad terminology, that's just one of those things you always hear floating around so thought I'd give it a mention.

And I really dig it, so thanks for the kick in the ass! It's not going to displace my SSS Albert for single coil tones, but it's definitely icing on the cake for an already stellar fiddle :)

Congrats! Nice score and great pics. I was thinking about getting a 25th anniversary but now that I see this it's giving me some second thoughts...
