I had one of those, a trans red one. I had heard it was a problem with the glue used in the cases, and that it caused some sort of reaction with the finish.

That's exactly what it was. A company (that shall remain nameless) changed the type of glue used inside the cases without letting anyone know.

Presto, hey, chemical reaction!

The most famous, or infamous, 'goopy' finish is the pre-EB version, which was about a foot thick and tended to fall off in chunks the size of toaster ovens.

And it would cloud up, too.

anyway mike please dont hijack this thread anymore...the goop the original poster was refering to the heavy polyester. We have never painted soft bodies. Isnt it funny that the case company paid for many refinishes?

I recognize that bass. Was that bass ever displayed at the factory? Maybe one of the local open houses late 90's to 2000. I can't remember what day of the week it is sometimes when traveling, but I always remember a unique Instrument.
