I ordered a nut for my 2006 Stingray and it looks like this:

My question is, when I take it in to get it installed, does that little locator (the stubby cylinder on the backside of the nut) fit into a hole in the nut slot? I thought it would be good to know in case they weren't sure how to remove the old one - ie. tapping it out would break off the locator (if that's actually what it is).

I have no idea how a nut is removed

(The nut files where purchased from Stew Mac to adjust the action later on)

Well, I decided to try my skills at luthery, which is to say I found out I have none...:D

So here it is, after carefully scoring around the nut to separate the finish, I decided to remove the nut on my own. Here are the results:

Unfortunately for me, I ended up breaking the locator and the remainder is sitting snuggly and happily in it's new home, my bass. It does look nice though. I'm never going to attempt this again

I'm thinking there's no way to avoid cutting of the pin on my new nut, but if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears (and thumbs). The rest should be easy though.

I'll see what I can do here...keep everybody posted

4 Hours later....

I finally decided to instal the nut my self. Instead of trying to drill out the location pin I cut off the pin on the new nut with a hacksaw, sanded it smooth, cleaned out the slot and tappped it in sideways. I just finished filing the string slots with the gauged files and checked my progress with my trusty digital calipers and quite honestly this bass has never played so good. It was weird at first because none of the strings would sit at the botom of the factory slots (although maybe they're just "starter slots") :)

I'm glad I made the decision to do it the way I wanted it done.
