Found myself in the Totowa, NJ GC today. They have a Bongo HH in Sapphire Black (I think) w/ Moonstone (I think) for a steal (I'm sure!)... It had a clearance tag on it.

Not sure if I can print the price, but I noticed another Bongo HH beside it for $400.00 more!

I found one on clearance last month here in Dallas, and while it was a good deal, the thing I noted is that the newer ones are typically priced with a case, and the older ones are not. Still a good deal, but may not be as good as you think if you need to add the case . . . .

The Plainfied GC location is also looking to move out some Bongos (w/cases).
I could not believe the prices . . . talk about temptation.

Yeah that happens at GC. Mine was about $400 cheaper than "lesser" Bongos hanging nearby. Here's what the manager told me about the huge price discrepency. He said EB assigns them a "clearance allowance" but that they can distribute it anyway they choose. In this case, they put smaller discounts on a few EB basses but decided to put a really impressive price dorop on a really noticeable bass [DG 5HH].

Any authoritative comments [BP??] on the "clearance allowance" story from GC?

I think each store is given some kind of Big Happy Markdown Allowance, but it doesn't come from the manufacturers.

As I believe BP so eloquently stated above.

It's gone - and it happened right before my very eyes...

I tried hard to resist, but the deal was too good - we're talking used price on a brand-new Bongo. It stuck in my head all week...

Thursday morning I call my cousin - "I'm going there straight from work, just to noodle with it!"... He warns me if I go beyond "noodling" my wife will kill me! I call GC within minutes of them opening - the Bongo is still there! Just going to noodle with it I tell myself...

I get out of the office 90 minutes later than I originally plan to... I get a call while on the way over and spend 10 more minutes in the parking lot before heading into GC... This is all relative...

There's a guy there looking at MY bass... I am reluctant to reach for it as it's hanging on a high rack... I go looking for a salesman - there's no one around. I head back to the bass - He's taken it down already and is looking it over!

He says to me, in a heavy European accent, "This, American?". "Yes", I tell him. "It is American made". "This no sound like that one?" he asks, pointing to a Stingray. "No, this sounds very different - more agressive" I tell him.

"More agressive, eh? Thank you" he tells me and he promptly walks to the front counter and buys it on the spot.

I stand there stunned for a moment, then realize I can go home to a happy wife who has no idea how close I came to sleeping on the couch! ;)

That's what ya get for being honest. Should've bad-mouthed it, made toilet seat jokes, etc. etc.

BTW, over the past week I've stopped by a couple of the local GCs here in CT (only an hour or so from the NJ GC in question, for those of you from elsewhere). No good deals to be had...the Bongos are all in the $1200 range.
