O/T The WORST town in America for musicians........

seems like everyone that lives here has better things to do than go see live music. sure, touring bands get a crowd but there's no real "scene" for any genre.

esp. w/ punk rock there's this overwhelming attitude of "eh, whata re you 16? i grew out of that and have a cool haircut now"

Atlanta is HORRIBLE!!!

My last band literally purchased a van and a trailer so we could tour regionally on the weekends and actually play to a crowd... thats sad.... on the other hand, the kids we played to really enjoyed it.

It is kind of strange here it Tenn. You play local and no one could care less who you are. But go out of town and play......The place is packed and people are telling you how good your band is. Go figure

OK Time for a deep thinkin pompous poppa post

First off our industry does zero to pair players by ability and genres. In golf you have a handicap, in tennis there is a rating system 6.0, 5.5 and even a ladder. The double edged sword of being a musician is that it is subjective.....ten people can listen to a guitar player and 8 think he sucks and two think that they just witnessed live channelling by hendrix.

An avid tennis player or golfer doesnt fancy him or herself as the next Roger Federer or Tiger Woods...the local bar guy thinks that he got cheated or is just biding his time before he gets discovered.

THere is no Emily Post for players. There is no code of conduct or etiquette that is part of the process of learning or playing the instrument or interacting in a band.. Any other Hobby playing is only part of the deal.

So you have an unbalanced , unjustified ego and you cant tell them anything so you just continue your search.....

My Dad taught me...drilled it into me.....Start on time, dont turn your back to the audience for more than two seconds, mix your tempo and keys, be ready in between songs, treat the audience with respect regardless of what the gig is, if you make a mistake keep playing like nothing happened, have spare strings, cables strap, amp.....avoid cliches on the mike.....bring it down for the start of verses and solos. NEver let the audience know that the lead singer is a jerk and the bas player just hit on your wife. Take the guy that shows up to rehearsals that isnt messed up and knows what not to play over the hot shot who is doing you a favor playing with you.

A band is chemistry and the slogging through the dog doo for those rare moments where everything happens just right. Its those times that will keep you in the garage waiting for a guitar player that is never gonna show

Damn, are our Dad's related, almost word for word that was drilled into my head since i was 6 years old, and another famous thing he told me was, As a kid growing up around my dad who was a session guy in Toronto, Canada in his time, we as kids thought we we're better players then we really we're.

So Dad's famous words that put us into check real quick was, Think your just so great all your life but son but reality will tell you just how good you really are by how much that phone rings.

ya whenever we play in San Jose a bunch of people show up and the crowd's really into it. its crazy cuz we know a lot of people in SF. they're just too cool i guess

Hey Now, I'd be there yesterday but I have this Wedding that Some Parent Booked one year ago to date and that's on the same date and there's just no way I can Back out of this, especialy when I do 65% of the vocals. Somewhere near San Luis Obispo, Santa Margarita, So at least l'll be there in spirit.

OUCH! that is pulling the band aid off with some hair. I live 2 hours from SLO and about 5 hours from the desert. If it ever comes back to SLO I will find a way to attend. This is just another painful reminder for me why traveling for a living sucks lemons sometimes. Responsibility = family > fun.

Sorry for the rant and hijack BP. I just having trouble getting over this one. I really wanted to come.

Now back to the topic.....

After reading this I consider myself lucky to to have a great bunch musicians to play with. Its mostly church gigs with the occasional coffee house gig, but at least I don't have to play the blues
