WELL SAID MY FRIEND (cbpmmjp05 )

I think over these next days you'll get a lot of good and bad reviews about DT's latest work. I personally think that if you're really a DT fan, you'll pay no attention to it. I'm loving it everytime i hear it! They just keep up with the good work. By the way I already got my tickets to Gigantour Aug24 PNC - New Jersey - DT RULEZZZ!!!

I also want to say something about the artwork. I think the artwork is kinda cool...almost later Pink Floyd-esque but the under tray card is pretty lame. An eight ball with a DT logo on it? Could you get any more cheezy? Its not a big deal at the end of the day but one of the only things I don't like about the album. John Myung is a heck of a bassist also.

Understament? I love Petrucci as much as anyone, but listening to DT stuff enough I always end up listening to what Myung is doing. He's usually doing something unexpected, to my ear. He manages to fit some unique stuff in all the songs, which are often pretty busy as is, without the rhythm section getting out of hand.

Oh, I thought this was the guitar side. I didn't know you guys actually listened to the bass... ;)

I love the bass, I've always kind of been a closet bass player. They're lots of fun when played well. Sometimes at a jam or something, I'll volunteer to play bass just for kicks, since nobody usually seems to want to do it. ;) If I didn't love the guitar so much I'd be a bass player for sure.

About the Myung being a heck of a bassist - that is so true, he is incredible. As are Petrucci (obv) Portnoy and Rudess. All such incredible musicians.

Someone once said that John Myung was the only bass player they knew who 'warmed down' for like 3 hours after a performance. I can't remember if it was Petrucci who said that or Portnoy, or someone altogether different. (This is in addition to several hours of warming UP before the show!)

Anyway, I've noticed for years that all my favorite songs have great bass lines and great bass players. When I write and record at home, I put a lot of effort into writing the bass lines to make them interesting, melodic, and often times featured.

Just like John P. you don't get THAT good by just picking up your bass for an hour a day. That guy has put in an insane amount of time on his instrument and it obviously shows! Jaw dropping chops.

Back to the topic :D :

I just listened to Octavarium. It made me go back and listen to TOT. Together, these may be the best DT "album" yet.

And I say this after listening to TOT once after purchasing it and shelving it until now. I really disliked that album. Until now. I feel like this was the final chapter that completed that album. I don't think can listen to TOT without following it up with Octavarium. Is that too weird? Very very very pleasantly surprised, I guess, with both albums.

TOT got alot of flack when it first came out, l loved the album when l first heard it.

It sounds a bit wierd for me to to listen to TOT then follow it up with Octavarium, they are 2 different albums, l think anyway, it would be like watching the original Nutty professor (with jerry lewis) then watching the nutty professor 2 (with Eddie Murphy), although the movies are similar they are different, if you can understand were l'm coming from, now l'm the one sounding wired. hehe.

I haven't heard the album yet. I will probably try to pick it up one upcoming weekend in the not-too-distant future. I did have to say though OC, that's a great tagline... I love it!

I was a Fates Warning fan up until the album that followed "Parallels".. what was it called? Inside Out? When I bought that disc and brought it home, it seemed like all the songs sounded the same. So I haven't kept up with them since that time. I should probably give it another listen though, I don't thinik I played "Inside Out" more than one or two times. I also have two Matheos solo CD's, one of which I like. (The first one.)

Yeah Inside Out......its a grower and more on the commercial side but there are some really good songs on there!!! The albums that followed were a little more harder IMO and very, very good! Their latest "FWX" is their best in a long time.again IMO!!! *LOL* I think if you like Dream Theater, you probably like Fates Warning as well!!!!

Yeah, in the middle instrumental section of Octavarium. The tone Rudess uses sounds almost exact to that of Emersons. I love that section.

After giving this album a few listens, I gotta say I really like it. HOWEVER, J.M.'s playing is a tad sloppy(which is weird 'cause he's usually solid) on the intro to Panic Attack. Oh well, the title track alone makes this album worth buying if you ask me.
