Which does he use most? I don't see many pics of him using the Y2D. Isn't the model 2 years old now. It seems that in every clinic pic I see of him, he's using his #1 or another original model. I do see some concert pics of him using the Y2D every once in a while.

Am I just not seeing things correctly? I realize that what you see through any type of media may or may not be the actual way things are. Someone who knows the real scoop please let me in on it. Which model does Steve use more, either or does he use both models equally?

Cheers,

as i saw him at the clinic in munich and the Deep Purple concert in Nuernberg, he used the Y2D most of the time. he only played one song and his guitarsolo with the #1 all the other time he used the Y2D.
mostly he used the Y2D with fixed bridge. if i remember corretly he used the FR version during highway star and one more song.
but all this was more than one year ago.

As JW said, he only uses #1 for his solo (which segues into "The Well Dressed Guitar"). All other songs are done on various Y2D's. I saw DP last month so he's still doing this.

I saw the same - with DP most of the time the Y2D. Last year in Stuttgart he used the #1 for his solo, the "well dressed guitar" and "lazy" (played in a row). Y2D FR for Perfect Strangers and Highway Star. All the others with his 2 or 3 Y2D hardtail models.

Then I saw many pics of clinics and also Dregs/SMB shows with #1.

>>> My theory is: For the more challenging things like: solo, Dregs or SMB the #1 and for the simple things like DP the Y2D

If you look at his Equipment feature on his website you see the equipment for the 2007 purple shows: Y2D, Y2D (FR), old (FR), Y2D, Y2D

And of course practising not on #1 to save the frets (like he says on the famous video clips with Sterling)

btw. good question !!!

Cool, thanks for that. I like reading this stuff.

Thanks...

Hmmm, More challenging stuff requires the original and simpler material, the Y2D?

While I was out mowing my dead leaves, I was thinking about this. Having your #1 with you for 20-something years, I guess you might bond with it a bit and know all its nuances...

The last time I saw the Dregs, he seemed to be using the older model more. However, the Y2D was VERY new at the time. In fact, I think it was during NAMM week. So perhaps he has become more comfortable with it in the last couple of years.

regardless of which guitar he plays, he would not be caught playing without his slevelss shirts...

it's okay if you're that good on the guitar, you can get away with wearing whatever you want.

Anyone know the output either in DC Resistance or millivolts? I have read that the Steve Morse DiMarzios are pretty high output, yet my DiMarzio Air Zone and Air Norton seem louder to me. Maybe it's because the Morse hummers are set lower than the AZ/AN pickups.

Nevermind, I found the answer...:D

Morse bridge (DP-200) specs:
Wiring: 4 Conductor
Magnet: Ceramic
Output: 450 mV
DC Resistance: 9.64K
Tone Guide (Based on a 1-10 scale)
Treble: 6
Mid: 7.5
Bass: 5.5

Air Zone specs:
Wiring: 4 Conductor
Magnet: Alnico5
Output: 323 mV
DC Resistance: 17.49K
Tone Guide (Based on a 1-10 scale)
Treble: 5
Mid: 8.5
Bass: 8.5

That would explain that; however, the neck pickup's measurements are screwy....

Morse bridge (DP-200) specs:
Wiring: 4 Conductor
Magnet: Ceramic
Output: 250 mV
DC Resistance: 20.5K
Tone Guide (Based on a 1-10 scale)
Treble: 4
Mid: 6
Bass: 6

Resistance is really only part of the equation. Inductance is more useful- gives you the "sonic window" of the p'up. But it's rarely quoted. And output, well there aren't any standards for how to generate that voltage. (How hard to hit the string, what frequency, etc.)

In general, I don't find numbers are a good way to evaluate pickups. Hearing is believing.
