Hm... Bass gitir insurance, you folks say? I didn't know there was such a thing! Anyway, how much do you guys pay per month and what kind of coverage do you get?

I have all my bass and PA gear covered under a separate musical equipment policy. It's not cheap - the annual premium is 3% of the replacement value - but it covers virtually ANY situation - fire (anywhere), damage from a vehicle accident, theft (from anywhere, including theft from a venue or vehicle, attended or otherwise), malicious damage, accidental damage. If I broke my Stingray's neck over the head of a drunk audience member who jumps up on stage it would be covered. Like I said, it's not cheap, as I have over $30,000 worth of gear, but it's peace of mind, plus it's tax deductible if you are earning income from the equipment (eg. in a band)

in your situation it's appropriate to have seperate insurance, as most regular policies won't cover commercial use.

if it's stolen from a gig or breaks at a gig, you are screwed.

My policy is through an Australian broker, so I doubt it would cover you, but I'm sure there are similar policies available in other countries.

For example, a Google search for "musical instrument insurance" brings up a lot of hits, including this interesting site .... http://www.clarionins.com/index/index.asp

>>>No I already checked the invoice. There's nothing on it but the retailers and EB's standard part number.

Although the invoice doesn't have the serial, the store should. If they don"t try and get their consignment number. I'm sure EB will have full details (including serials) of exactly what was sent to them.

When you get the serial (and you will with a bit of detective work), give it to me, with a bigger pic if you have one, and I'll put a stolen Bass notice on my website.

Also, I scan ebay daily so I'll soon pick it up if it goes on the open market.

Insurance .... hmmm. there may be a better way ...

Anyone seen that movie Blade w/ Wesley Snipes?

Well in that movie you see that if anyone other than Blade picks up Blade's sword, then these crazy spiky things come out of the handle and f-up the person's hand. maybe ill rig something like that into the necks of my basses.

Geez. Sorry to say I can't offer much, I'd be in pieces if I lost one of my basses. My best wishes, hopes, prayers, and everything I can offer goes out to you, Chris.

Before owning the store I sold insurance here in IL for 7 years. I'm willing to bet if you had homeowners insurance, your personal property (bass) is covered anywhere in the US. Get out your policy and read under the section of Personal Property and when they will pay and for what losses. If it was stolen from a friends apt., it probably won't be considered professional use. If it were stolen from the actual bar or venue, then you might have had some 'splaining to do. I believe the insurance company will pay out, less your deductible.

My recommendation is to get what they call an Inland Marine policy and schedule all of your gear with descriptions and serial numbers and insure it for what it would cost to go out and replace it today. This policy is separate from your homeowners insurance, and most companies will only write it as a companion policy to your existing home policy. What's good about this is that you can choose a lower deductible than your home policy. Even better, photograph ALL of your gear and keep it in a separate location.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Would be a stupid lie to tell as is all lies. The Police report out of town tells the story.

EB does know what basses it built. Any kind of accurate description right down the the build date will get the serial. Getting the serial is your best bet in recovery. IMHO.

Rod gave the best advice on tracking the bass I have heard once again IMHO.

My insurance will not cover my bass unless it is stolen from my home. I checked.

My bass will not leave my sight when I gig. Heck I may even start carrying a gun to gigs just in case someone is bigger than me. My SR 5 is family and I now see the need to protect it. I never thought of that until this thread. I would be devastated as I know you are.

I wish you a speedy and rapid recovery. I feel for your loss.

That's one of my worst nightmares (in terms of inanimate possessions, anyway). That totally sucks... do these guys have no idea how irreplacable instruments can be???

no...

Having worked in music retail (which i'm sure many of you have), i've dealt with guys trying to sell stolen gear. the SN is usually sanded off or sometimes (if they're stupid and/or lazy) just gouged off with a screwdriver (i cry..).

I would bet almost anything that if you got the SN to them quick enough (hopefully it might not already be too late, thieves act quickly), that you will get your bass back.

here's a good plan of attack:
police report - done
insurance - done?
tell GC.

go talk to whoever you deal with at GC, they have an immense network of people who can spread the word about this stolen bass in the area. have the SN and the description handy, as well as any identifying marks that would help prove the bass is yours in the event that the SN is somehow removed from the neck plate (it happens).

Most states require some sort of "police hold" on used equipment for cases just like this.

So take heart my good man, life is not all that bad, it's the people living it that are bad.

Well all:

I spoke with an officer from the Cleveland PD. If I wasn't a law abiding type person - I think I could do some bad, bad things... He basically said that I shouldn't get my hopes up. He said 99% of the time things like this never turn up. He said that even if I got the SN that it still probably wouldn't work out and that I shouldn't get my hopes up.

My insurance company called - since I didn't have the SR5 on file with them they can't cover it. Bull$hit!!!! She said that since the list price is more than $1500 it has to be on file with the insurance company. Hello?? Is anybody there? What kind of crap is this? I tried telling her the retail price is around $1200-$1300. She didn't care. Her and I will be discussing this a bit more...

So unless a miracle happens and it turns up somewhere it looks like I might as well begin the mourning process....... :( :( :(

Errrr......

"I run in the too damn broke to have insurance category, so everytime I leave the house I hope and pray..."

OK, you're broke - but you can / could afford :-

2004 Lava Pearl Stingray
1994 Carbon Blue Pearl Sterling
2002 Stratus Blue Sparkle Stingray

.....Ever thought about trading one bass for insurance (or maybe buying a policy as opposed to your 2004 Leava Pearl SR), then you can leave the prayer mat at home....

Guys - you should all consider this a wake-up call. Get insured, via a specialist if necessary & CHECK the terms of cover. A lot of heartache could be saved....

Insurance is not terribly expensive. I FINALLY stopped pressing my luck, and got Renter's Insurance since I got Direct TV (NFL Sunday Ticket-W00t!) and had to have $100,000 in liability for the apt office to allow me to have it. I also got $50,000 in personal property. I'm paying less than $20/month.

It's a very safe complex, and I have a high visibility apartment on the third floor, so I'm not terribly worried about a break-in--but you never know when some idiot is going to fall asleep with a cigarette in his mouth, ya know?

My gear isn't covered at gigs, unfortunately, but I have a one trip load in, and there is always someone with the gear from the band. I'll probably look into a instrument insurance policy in the near future, too.

I'm sorry to hear about your bass, CG--my guitar player had a magical PRS stolen from him in the early 90s. It still makes him cringe to see a green PRS to this day...Hopefully, you'll have better luck.

Insurance isn't that expensive, etc. I just feel this time I'm going to get burned.

We were never told about having to inform the insurance company about high dollar items. My laptop cost me $2000 and I've never informed them about that - nor did I know I had to.

For those of you who don't know - I have house insurance that covers these types of things - even if the item isn't at "the house" when it's stolen, etc. However, my insurance company (Western Reserve) is saying that any items with a list price of $1500 or greater must be on file with their offices. This is news to my wife and I. Needless to say this is ticking me off.....

Sounds like grounds for cancelling a policy, and finding someone new, to me.

Unfortunately, it also reminds me that I still need to go through and take digital pictures of all of my stuff and burn them to a cd for the bank deposit box...
