The UPS guy kindly delivered the old Silo I grabbed off of eBay(Thanks again to the guys who didn't run up the price on me).

It's in better shape than I thought it would be. The electronics are fine and the neck is in very, very good condition, almost no fretwear. It palys very smoothly and sounds great. The finish is 'effed. It seems like someone actually "melted" pattern marks into the paint. Maybe it was a reaction with the paint/finish by something it was wrapped or stored in? There are some nasty bite marks on the upper horn and the expected dings on the bottom edge from leaning the guitar any 'ole place. Here are some pics:

Now to send it back to EBMM for some TLC.

Thanks Ern!

I love the pup covers. I trust that you have a bunch more "before" shots. This is going to be way cool!

Very cool score. I'm excited to see the after shots. Exactly whats going to be done to her?

I just hoping that the missing and broken parts can be replaced and something can be done about the big dents and the abused finish.

I will make it a very playable guitar for free. That doesnt include refinishing the axe..let us buff it out and leave the teeth marks because I think that refinishing is would be worng. lets talk

Ernie,
If by any chance you got hold of SRV "number one" you wouldn't refinish it, wouldn't you ?
This is not a celebrity piece but it surely has at least some EBMM historical value, I wouldn't mess with the finish.

Then again, I droped my almost new AxisSS on the concrete floor (ouch!), chiped out a laquer along with a piece of wood from the upper back side, picked it up, checked the tuning and never looked back.

p.s. And yes, I do prefer natural woman over the shiny plastic dolls. :D

I will send it back to you and leave any repair desicions up to you guys in SLO. Don't get me wrong BP, I was never looking for a freebee, I will pay for whatever work is done on the guitar.

Congrats Ernie - nice to see it made it to youand was actually in better "playable" condition then you would have thought.

Just 2 cents, but I'm also in the camp to repair it to make it fully functional but not to fully refinish. Just think it makes it a little more interesting and gives it a bit more character based on its provenance.

Either way - enjoy it!!

ernie I know that you are not a freeloader (like Jack) I just think that it should have the original finish. If you want us to paint it we will but I would advise against it.

those melted marks you describe are from someone leaving the guitar in it's case & in direct sunlight allowing the guitar to to get very hot & actually sweating moisture through the old nitro finish it has....(& should keep !!!!!!!!!!!!)
the patterns are marks from the case when the finish was heated & softened inside the case.
please don't make me explain how i know this particular problem.

mine buffed up pretty nice again though.

Aha! I though it was something like that. I understand the desire of keeping the old Nitro finish on the guitar and will abide by it.

Ever watch antiques road show?
When ever someone refinishes a piece the value goes down by an order of magnitude. Even though the factory would be redoing it I have to say that I agree with BP on the plan for this one.
Where is NorM and what have you done with him?
