I keep wondering what should be the best way to dispose of your used strings, I know that in my household at least, between me and my son we go through heaps of them. I asked my local guitar shop what do they do with their used strings they told me that they get simply thrown away with the rest of the common trash, because the scrap metal collectors are not interested in them, as there is no recycling value in them? Can that be right?

If strings manufacturers make these out of metal wouldn't they be interested in melting old strings to produce new ones?

Just a thought....

just drop them in the recycle bin or at scrap yard if you're that concerned

I do that, infact they go in the same bin as cans and tins but I was just wondering if I should keep them to return them to any factory willing to use them for recycling.

NO factorys has the melting stuff or draws wire....We encourage everybody to recycle via traditional methods.....

Funny thing......I can't throw anything out. If I'm replacing a set of strings, I keep the old ones. If I break a single string.....I take an old one to replace it. Once one has broken, it goes into my recycling bin along with the cans.

this title bugs me it implies an environmental issue that isnt there. I cannot fathom the thought of creating an international recycling program for one segment of a small industry...first off it would add extra paper gas burn and electricity......secondly it would add about a buck a set to strings.....I cannot see why we would set up a separate deal when there is already an efficient model in existence.

Oh.....as far as uses for old strings......cats LOVE to chase them. Cats don't see all that well but they see motion and will chase the string as it moves. One of my cats ends up sitting and waiting when I change strings. If I don't play with the string with her, she'll go after the new ones at the headstock if I have not yet cut them.......believe me....I'm quick to cut them.

A bass E string makes a great poker for your bong. Cut it about 6 to 8 inches long and leave the ball end on it for something to hold onto. Clean it with alcohol.

Old Strings

Well, if you wanted to strangle someone, I imagine they would make excellent murder weapons, LOL.
