Has anyone experienced issues with fitting newer kevlar cords on older VP pedals? If so, this post may help!!
I recently won a 90s VP pedal on eBay - it has the jacks on the side.
It was in pretty poor shape. I had to replace the rubber stoppers and bushings which were real worn. I also replaced the pot (old style one) which the previous owner had tried to clean but ruined.
Also replaced the cord (+spring) which was green!!
All Good.
However, I soon after I begun to experience problems when doing sharp swells. Turned out that if I swelled the volume quickly, the cord around the pot would slip, which threw the pot position out and the pedal wouldn't return to toe down.
I tried refitting the cord dozens of times - no joy.
Then I looked at the original cord and spring, in comparison to the brand new set. Overall the total combined length of the cords in each set were the same, although the spring placement is slightly different. The spring is visibly different but appears to be the same tension.
I wasn't sure which way to go?
Although the cords seemed the same, I'm sure there wasn't enough tension to prevent slippage.
My only thought was to shorten the cord length slightly - I did this by tying a knot approx. 5mm from the end of the shorter cord. This was only a slight adjustment SOLVED THE PROBLEM
The pedal tension is a little stiffer now but there are no slippage problems.
There may be a better way of shortening the cord lengths at the mounts on the pedal, but using a knot is a quick way to get a result.
I'd be interested if anyone else has had this problem!! Or knowledge of how the cord lengths have changed, or whether EB Quality Control is a little lax.
