I was wondering, I bought an OLP MM1 yesterday and wow is it bad ass but I was wanting to upgrade the tuners and put a floyd on it eventually. My question is what kind of tuners can I swap out? Schallers? Gotah? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks for the welcome. I usually play my Kramers but when I played this thing I fell in love with it, espacially for 129 bucks. Has anyone ever ordered parts from Ernie ball before? I may try to order tuners from them. Next is a tone zone and air norton then the floyd. Any help would be appreciated.

Fudd,

I'd recommend the Schaller locking tuners if you're staying with the vintage trem setup. Warmoth is the cheapest place I've found them. EBMM can sell them to you, but you'll have to pay retail price for them, about $100 a set, roughly.

Warmoth Direct - Tuning Machines

They list them as mini locking tuners, but they're the standard size - same that EBMM sells. Plus, they're only $8.50 a piece.

With any set you get, you'll need 4 left and 2 right.

If you go with a Floyd setup, then the locking tuners are unnecessary. The locking nut takes the tuners out of the equation. you could go with any brand you want, as long as they are the same size as the schallers. Again, you'll need 4 left and 2 right.

Cheers Tonyevh - I thought I saw those machine heads elsewhere - good deal on them too!

Not being a Floyd owner - would it be feasible to fit the floyd but not the locking nut - relying solely on the locking tuners - would save a bit of work too?

no, you'd still need the locking nut. even with locking tuners, the nut still allows for string binding or slippage. The tuning would never be stable.

also, I can tell you from personal experience that the Schaller locking tuners fit perfectly on the OLP. I had a OLP Benji that I upgraded the tuners to the Schallers. The mounting holes even matched up - no additional drilling required.

Alright. I just tries out the new EVH Wolfgang special and I gotta say I was quite dissappointed. It plays just as good as my OLP MM1 and I also tried the Sterling AX4 and I got to thinking about putting a Floyd on my OLP and putting locking tuners on it. Is it possible? Or is it alot of hassles with routing and drilling extra holes?
