i understand the wound strings are coated and that the plain strings are titanium reinforced around the ball end...but most important of all is...are the plain strings coated at all?

the plain strings are the ones that turn black and get ratty within a few days.

It's not an "anit rust" playing per se, but yes, the whole string is coated. That's what makes them last much longer.

That's odd, at least it doesn't happen to me. Your best bet is to contact EB customer service and ask their advice. They'll know what's going on better than anyone.

i did exactly that and talked to brian ball who then sent me three packs gratis which i was not looking for but greatly appreciate.

great service.

i sent in the set mentioned above that i had issues with for brian and the team to analyze, and see what may have been the matter with them.

The coated titanium strings are awesome ... they do last longer for me than the non-coated. The thing I like most about them, is they feel like "normal" strings. When I tried the Elixir coated, the string tension was much stiffer. Not sure why? Prefer the EB coated ...

Coated Hybrid for me again this last change on electric, and new coated Slinky Acoustic 11's for the FIRST time, moving away from an alternative after loyalty of over 15 years.

I think the risk is minimal. They feel great so far, and sound so good.

The coated Slinkys are coated on all strings and the plain strings are also reinforced with titanium wire.

This is what I'm not clear on. What exactly is the deal with the plain strings? According to the above, it sounds like there's an extra layer. How are they reinforced with titanium?

Thanks . . .

The plain strings have the same coating as the wound strings, AND they have an extra winding of titanium wire around the lock twist at the ball end, for extra protection against premature breakage or unwinding (which I see most often due to sharp edges inside bridge blocks or tailpieces).
