I bought a couple of Dan Erlewine's Guitar Set-Up books, and now i am wanting too try and practice the technics in the 2 books, i am toying with the idea of buying one of the OLP's version of the Silo Special too practice on and hone my skills on, so that way if i give the guitar a bad case of FUBAR it won't be too much of a loss and i can chuck one up to experience. It sounds good too me but i thought i would get some other opinions on what you guys think.

I´m not a specialist in setting-up guitars in some extreme ways...but what are you thinking of, that would destroy your guitar in a way which is irreparable?

Thats what I would do, you certainly do not want to FUBAR your balls, and a cheap look alike is great for practice, they dont let interns operate on living beings LOL so good choice, plus you can search the evil bay and find an OLP pretty cheap sometimes.

I bought a "Strat" type guitar for £25 and practiced on that.
Those books you have are great books.

Treat yourself to a good set of tools - and keep 'em sharp!

A good friend of mine is the main repairer for most of the stores here in town, including MM. I have been going to his shop for nearly 20 years and his experience has been invaluable to me learning how to care for my guitars. Is there someone in your area that can help you?

I could see getting a beater if you wanted to practice refinishing or routing for pickups, or doing fret work, or something like that. It's unlikely you'll FUBAR a setup.

we have a guy here that we call PAM which stands for the "Paddington Axe Murderer" people still take their guitars to him and he charges like a wounded bull.

Why not get a total beater from ebay and have a go and renovating it. It would be a good project, and not the end of the world if it all goes horribly wrong!
