Ordering of custom basses from Musicman?!.........not

I can't believe that it's not even an option to do. I mean, I love my bongo, love Musicman, but you can only have a BRF if you are lucky enough to wait a year and get your hands on one almost by accident? I want a BFR 6 string fretless HH Bongo with a roasted neck, and if I have the money to buy one, I can't understand why it's not an option..... only endorsed artists? That sucks, because now I have to look for another company to make me a Fretless bass guitar...... and I rather have a Bongo with Piezo....oh well I guess.....
Oh, and no offense, I can only have an Ebony finger board if I get the stealth? Stealth pain doesn't look good, and I shouldn't have to buy something I don't want just for a fingerboard.....kind of ridiculous don't you think? Maybe I could join a death metal band if I bought a stealth though (sarcasm off)

There are a gazillion options. You have no idea what it would take to make ONE custom bass or how much money it would entail to simply come up with the proper design, tooling, etc. You don't like it....oh well. BTW...I play in a death metal band so don't break your neck when you jump off your high horse. Next time....use the search function...this (high) horse has been beat to death (metal).

If you don't like it, start your own company. Just because you WANT doesn't mean you are ENTITLED. You want ebony, get a stealth and refinish it. BP and company may someday open the gates on ebony but not now so why worry and complain about what you can't change.

Just join the line with all the people that kept complaining about a 19mm spacing and when BP offered it they all headed for the hills!!!
and as koogs said EB offers millions of options
on a serious note order the bass as close to what you want then take it to a trusted local luthier to get it to exactly what you want

It pains me to remember that I made a very similar entrance in to the forum. I believe I was whining because I was fixated on basically ordering a 20th (SR4 ... in 2007).

A lot of people would probably like this. I cannot stand Ebony though. Too sizzly sounding to me. Love rosewood and I love pau ferro though!

Also, I have read in other threads on other forums that getting stable ebony is getting harder and harder. This migght be a reason why, but don't hold me to it. Just repeating the crap I read on the internet.

+1 - this would be a nice regular option (sorry BP - I know you're still dealing with 19mm spacing and all the other 'I want a Musicman but it must have xyz Acme thingy knobs etc' posts which have followed that. I guess there are good reasons why it's not a regular option - BUT when it does appear (roasted; ebony edition for Germany; stealth) - Wow is the word that comes to mind

Particlularly nice option for fretless IMHO (though I love my pao ferro SR4).

hunnerts of greenbux, but a stock bass plus a luthier's work
is still cheaper than a toadally kustum ax.

Yup, I too find it weird that if ebony is offered with a certain
paint scheme, then why is it not offered with any other paint
schemes ? This is NOT like the 19mm thing. This is existing
tooling, and an existing option, that seems arbitrarily to be
tied to a certain package.

I unnerstandt NOT offering an actual in-house custom shop.
It clearly wouid require a whole additional division of EBMM.
And I fully unnerstandt making special axen for sooperstarz
cuz there are various ways to spend marketing dollars, and
that is one well known way.

I just don't follow why it is that an existing materials option
like an ebony FB or a roasted maple neck, or for that matter
the mahogany body of the SR30th, cannot be more widely
available as a normal option.

Is it that time of year again for the Custom Shop debate? People demand all these options but not many people are will to put there money where there mouth is. Take a look at the 19mm SR5. What are they up to 10 orders now? Trust me i would love a hog bodied Bongo with a Spalt maple top, ebony board with black hardware but guess what... i am not planning on paying double or triple the cost of a normal Bongo to get it. Keeping the options minimal also keeps the price minimal. Last time i checked EBMM prices are quite competitive to other USA made basses.

A quick look at drumcityguitarland reveals Fender Custom Shop basses in the $3800 range for the street price. Last time i saw an EBMM in that range was a fully optioned 25th 5 string... and that was the list price. I believe Sterling said if you want something custom, he would be happy to make it if you had 50 (i think that is right) orders. Retooling bridges, pickups and necks i understand why he wanted 125 orders for a 19mm SR5. I am sold on EBMM quality and service. If you are not i have a simple solution, don't buy it. Someone somewhere else is willing to take your money. JOSH
