I've always enjoyed Tom Peterrson's (Sp?) stuff w/Cheap Trick, so I broke down and ordered one of these yesterday:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=bass/search/detail/base_pid/519244/

Too low a price to pass up, IMHO. I had a R*gue fretless for a couple of years as a studio "mule" until I passed it along to a bud. Good for the price. Not great, but good. Price so low you can just hand it to someone and say "Like it? Take it, it's yours," (Man, you should have seen his eyes get big! "You're kidding!!! No sh%t? Really?!?!..." That felt good!)

So, until BP decides to bring out an 8-cylinder Sterling or 'Ray, this is going to have to do. (cue Aerosmith: Dream on, Dream on....:D )

So, how foolish am I? Go ahead, I can take it!

I've toyed with the idea of picking up an 8-string...so far I can't justify it.

I'm not sold on Rogue axes; I'd probably start out with the Schecter Omen-8.

And, you're wasting BP's money and bandwidth starting a thread about a Rogue, why?

I'm happy you're happy with your new bass. But, this isn't really the appropriate place, now is it?

If I could just respectfully submit that I realize EB and BP fund this website, and it's intended purpose was to provide a discussion area for EB basses/products. But the reality is that a nice little community has formed here, and while most of us play EBMM's 99% of the time, we do own other basses. It seems to me, and I certainly understand if BP feels differently, that as long as we're not talking up a product that might take sales away from EB, it would be in everyone's best interest to allow the discussion. Truly, I'd like to stay away from some of those other bass forums, but you can only reread the same threads here so many times. In this case, since EB doesn't manufacture anything even close to an 8-string bass, and it was posted by a member in good standing, it benefits the community. As always, I may just be full of it, so feel free to disregard.

I could go either way with this subject, but why alienate those of us who do prefer to play EBMM axes, but also play other axes as well.

Ernie Ball basses still kick ass over the 'other' basses (IMO).

Yeah, but that's not the point. The point is, at least for me, that if I'm considering an 8-string bass or mandolin or keyboard, I'd like to be able to discuss it with my EB forum buds. If that's not acceptable, I totally understand and will continue to play and purchase EBMM basses, but from my perspective, it would be nice to have that freedom.

There are valid points on both sides of this topic:

BP pays for the bandwidth, so it's fair to say that he's likely to frown upon discussing non-EB axes here...

but, as JB23 pointed out,

it would be nice to discuss these other brands with our fellow Forumites, as we all consider each other family of sorts.

Plus, as also pointed out, the 8-string bass (in particular) doesn't offer direct competition to any bass that EBMM currently puts out. I'd equate that to the discussion of Ampeg/GK...whatever bass amps to the now-extinct Audiophile series.

Like I said earlier, I could go either way on this subject, and I'll respect BP's/Jack's/Jon's decision to delete this thread (should they go that route).

Hey, the last thing I want do is get you all pissed off

I know that BP pays for this bandwidth, and I thank him for it. My thinking was that, since EBMM does not make an 8 string, that I would merely mention a little gear-related info and get your reactions.

Do you think BP is threatened by this "competitor". I hope not. Have none of you never mentioned a non-EB product in any of your posts? I was not aware there was an "8-string forum" and I am pretty sure that the brand in question does not have a forum (now that would be a waste of bandwidth! Also, as has been said, "any club that would have me as a member, I would not want to join.") I would hope that you recognize that I recommend EBMM to everyone I know, loudly and consistently. I love my Sterling and every other musician I know is painfully aware of that.

As said above, " it would be nice to discuss these other brands with our fellow Forumites, as we all consider each other family of sorts."

I certainly respect any decision regarding this post, and I sincerely apologize to BP and everyone at EBMM if I have pissed you off.

As to my fellow forumites, I must say I'm a little saddened by your reactions.

:(

Lesson learned, though, I guess.

I don't see the distinction as being EBMM vs. non-EBMM...rather I see it as having respect for EBMM.

If you kill a post from a guy (who is an EBMM customer and who actively contributes to the discussion here) just because it's about a non-competing product, then he just might feel alienated enough to abandon the board. And that's not good. Eventually you wind up with a bunch of nodding yes-men who only tell you what you want to hear.

Using the logic of wasting bandwidth, well, then every thread with an OT in the title (and a bunch of threads that started out being about EBMM products but then took a dark and twisted turn) should be deleted too.

All EBMM all the time smacks of political correctness.

Now, if the guy said "I think my EBMMs suck and that's why I'm buying a different bass" or started spewing some other sort of BS that disses our host, then a lynch mob would probably be in order. But that's not what he said.

Oh, and Nick? You're foolish. Hey, you asked us to say so.

It's funny, sometimes the most well-intentioned remark or post can open a hornet's nest...

I ain't mad at'cha, though. :D

Thanks, adouglas, really! You have pretty much described my reactions to a "T".

At first, I thought "O.K. Fine. Won't be posting here anymore." (Wipes away tear.) Sniff, sniff

But then I thought about the forum and the friendship, respect, humor and mutual support that is displayed here everyday, and I thought "Okay. Deep breaths!"

As for your last comment: Yes! That's all I wanted...someone to tell me what a dumb @ss I am for buying this thing. And to respond: "I know".
