OT: Attention Jamiroquai fans!!!

Hey guys I know there are lots of bassists that like Jamiroquai due to the fact that Jay's music always has some tasty bass licks. After finding a bunch of mistakes on the net with bogus tabs and having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out what was played by keyboards or the bass, I decided to spring for Simon Merrick's transcription books. I even paid for the shipping from the UK which obviously wasn't cheap. Anyway, these books are fantastic. The second one, which focuses exclusively on Stuart Zender's work with the group, had Stuart himself checking out the accuracy of the tabs. I gotta say I have seen lots of tab books and this one takes the cake. They have a spiral binding which makes it easy to fold them backand heavy duty paper too. Now I just gotta work on my slap chops. And learning this material will most definitely do that and work on your timing.

Okay I rambled and I won't post the link to the website since it already sounds like a sales pitch. Just do a search on Stuart Zender and the dude who sells the books--Simon Merrick--runs his fansite. Also, Simon has a myspace page so do a search. He has some tasty original music from himself too up on there.

And to those who still haven't a clue who or what Jamiroquai is please go to iTunes and buy the song Mr. Moon and treat your ears. Don't steal it by downloading it's just a buck!! It's an older one but fun.

I like the bass playing on Jomiroquai's records, and i like to play along. I'm not a slapper, and the Jami I've played works wonderfully with just finger style, but i guess it "should" be slapped?

sure, jamiroquai bass lines are great! btw, hows your rating on those bass players so far---from stuart,and nick and now to paul? i red that on last album dynamite three different bass players were involved in recording. personally i like stuart the most for his style and energy, nick for his classy technique and paul for sound and feel. i got dissapointed when learn that he ( paul turner ) said musicman neck are crap and that theyre bad for slap ( on which i partly agree ). he still uses stingrays as he is e.b. endorser and im sure he loves that fantastic cut through a mix at big events, but he sure love better his fender jazz and f-bass....

I don't know the background, but it does seem odd that he (Paul Turner) should keep endorsing something he doesn't like. I hope there's some kind of misunderstending concerning what he said, or else he's rust an asshat.

I like Stuart the most. Period. I hope he comes back to Jam. He was seen watching a recent show and cheering them on so there's hope. I don't like his new band's music much except for that song Into The Sun.

Now, I think either Paul Turner was being sarcastic or if not he's crazy for what he said about Stingrays! Do you have a link to the interview where he said he doesn't like Stingrays for slap? That's what Stingrays are made for!

im not sure if i can send you link...i lost the trace...but if you so eager, you could find it at stuart zender com, go to forum and see about lovebox weekend... some guys chatted with stu and paul and that was the story about stingrays... and sure - paul turner wouldnt play bass which he dislike, but as i said, dont forget that he plays fender j bass and f bass as well! and yes, certainly he appreciate stingray for lot more reasons than for those few things he might dislike...

Thanks. I'll look it up. If he likes a jazz as a four stringer perhaps he's complaining about the 4 banger Stingray. He should play the 4 string Sterling if he wants the pencil neck. The 5 string Stingray has a fantastic neck. He can't be talking about that one.

and now i ve seen your final statement... you said stingrays are made for slap?
well.... i have to disagree there.
stingrays are good for all the things but not for slap.
to me, theres lot more better slap bass out - even warwick sounds better for slap. not to mention fender. status....etc.
stingrays rocks and rules for finger, pick, pop,...but slap isnt something you want to play on them.
just my opinion....

i think that he was reffering about 5er, as i saw him usually plays one... im not sure what he meant by crap neck, as i personally think 5er has nice neck ( im also playing one ) well, maybe its only hear and say afterall....

Ah, I see what you are saying. But I still love the sound. Different strokes. It's cool. But thanks for the heads up about the forum. Started posting there. Some guy posted some Meshell Ndegeocello video links and I'm so happy!!!!!!!!!!!! WoooHOOOO!!! I love my Meshell!! I'm gonna post about the vids in the general section of this forum Thank you!

Just talked to the dude who Paul said that to at a recent gig and he clarified that his biggest beef with the Stingray neck was how much it fluctuates to temp/humidity changes. Remember that Jam plays a lot of outdoor gigs. Here's a snip of his post:

"Just to clear up a couple of things really (cos I didn't really para-phrase Paul that accurately). I think I remember him saying that he preferred the sound of the 5 when slapped but wasn't THAT keen on the sound he gets out of them. I love the sound of a Stingray being beaten-silly, but you DO have to give them a bit more of a belt to get THAT sound out of them (Paul said he has his action set at about 4mm or something).

Second of all, when referring to the Stingray neck being crap, we were talking about it's ability to hold a setup for any longer than about a month - NOT the shape of them."

uh man youre doing some homework here!!!! so paul having high action? 4mm? i thought hes doing pretty low as i saw him gently touching strings ( or it seems so ) i also wanted to try lil bit higher as this low makes me playing as a little girl... thanx a lot!!!

Oh, it was Wiggles that did the homework! He had the conversation with him, I just got the info from him.

I'm about to raise my action after trying it real low too. I don't like playing like a girl and I'm a girl!

Nick Fyffe had quite a thing for white musicmans iirc.i saw him on Later with Jools Hollandcouple of times,once with a Sterling and another with a SR5 in said finish.

Great player,dead smooth and controlled technique.his playing was not so in your face as Zender's imo.more kind of bubbling under but always funky.

sure, nick is brilliant, very disciplined yet smooth and funky! never saw him with musicman untill now in this new shapeshifters video, he was yamaha endorser ( perhaps still is? )

i wanted white/white/maple 5er for my self, ( when saw mr. turner!!! )but at time i vent to buy it finally, they had only vintage sunburst/black/maple and it would take 2,3 month to order and get white...so i decide to take this one.... but i love it,ofcourse!
