Hi everybody.

I've just posted this question at TalkBass and thought I'd like to share it with my fellow MM players as well:

Just curious after a conversation I had with some friends. This question may be hard to answer for those of you who live in large cities where you can find lots of players, but I think it's easy for you guys/gals who (like me) live in small places where the musicians' roster is easily recognizable.

The question is: Can you tell if there's something in your playing that makes you easily recognizable to musicians and public in general from your city/area? So recognizable that you're the only one associated with that thing in your playing and anybody else who tries to do it is considered an imitator or "influenced by you"?

In my case, I've been told so many times that I fit into that (please notice that I'm not self-praising since I didn't invent any of those things and there's nothing special about them) because:

1- Nobody else wore the bass that high before:

bass1tm.jpg

(Which still looks weird to many people here)

2- This. One of my students, who has a kid, brought him once to the university and he said: "Look Ma! The guy who moves his guitar like this!" (While imitating the movement). Then asked me: "Why do you move your guitar like that?" I told him: "Because it has water inside and I'm just draining it".:D

3- This. Simply put, everybody thinks that the instrument may be damaged. After 14 years, none of my instruments have shown any problems because of that.

Again, there's nothing extraordinaire about wearing the bass like that, shaking it or whacking it. I didn't invent any of those techniques or tricks and that "recognition" is due to under-exposure to different players from people in my city, for sure. Just curious to know if any of you have similar experiences to share. Thank you in advance! :)

P.S.: I think Steve's licking routine qualifies. :D

well like u said - its kinda harder in a big city but some folks around the san francisco area "know about me" in the punk rock scene.

from comments ive heard im kinda/sorta known as "the guy that plays like the guy from Rancid". to me that's a huge compliment but personally I think im a long way from being as badass as Matt - but hey, ill take a compliment.

Yeah, I wish I was known for my playing, but I'll forever be known as "that @sshole with the Sterling and the Ampeg".

The last gig I played, the guy had a MIM F@nder Jazz 5 string and an old GK rig, and he thought that was just the bomb (this is indeed a small market)...until I showed up!

...of course, there are worse things to be known for!

Well, maybe I should add that I was the first EBMM Bongo owner in my town (one of my students got a sapphire black 4 string HH w/moonstone pickguard shortly after playing mine). I'd like to say I was the first EBMM owner here, but there was a Sterling before. Sometimes I dare to think that mine was the first Bongo in my country but I have no way to confirm it.

the only MM rep. here...

I'm the only person around here that plays EBMM, period. I may be wrong about that, but every band I've seen, and every bassist I know around here plays F*nder, Yamaha, Ibanez, etc. No MM except for me! Part of that may be that we have one music store that carries EBMM, and only a couple of them at a time.

There's a very good chance that I own the first Bongo shipped to Minnesota. This was before any of the GCs in the area stocked Bongos and I had put a down payment on it before it came in(March '04). I went to a small private College in St. Paul so pretty much everyone knew my name but I was the only one with a Bongo. One of my profs would always say "Damn that's an ugly bass but in a good way. I can't help but love it, 'cause it sounds so good!"

Back in Adelaide I was the only guy in town (population 1.5 million) with an SWR Henry 8x8, and the only bassist gigging with a Bongo.

Here in Jakarta I'm the only bassist in town (population 15 million) with a preamp/power amp rig, an SWR cab, a Stingray and, possibly, US Fenders. The Bongo is back in Australia, so I can't claim to be Indonesia's only EBMM Bongo player.

I was the first to bring a Bongo to Gainesville, Fl. But so far all our gigs have benn out of town. Certainly not the only one to play an EBMM. There are several young SR slingers in town.

I have one of the first SR5 HS's delivered from the factory to the UK - and certainly the first in the East Anglia region.
Am known amongst my peers here (and there are not many bass players out here) for my bouncing when playing and now the Bongo (as there are not many on the circuit out here)....

"Filling out" chords by using harmonics. Like when playing a low G, at the same time I hit the harmonics at the 5th fret on the rest of the strings (I dig 9ths). It's a beautiful sound. People who haven't heard a lot of bass don't even think it's possible to play "those high notes on a bass". I show them, and they look at me like I'm Einstein. They ask me: "How come you're not world-famous? That's incredible!" Funny stuff!

PHATTY - i would be happy with that....Matt is one of the most underated bass players going around.

People know me as the dude that wears bizzare clothes and does strange things on stage - as well as the dude with lightning fast fingers..... but that is probably it...

oh +10000. i love Matt. he's an amazing player.

its nice when people say i play like him, but i mean - i cant hold a candle to that dude. i know that. not to be too zen or anything but sometimes it feels like a lot of pressure. people will come to shows and say stuff like "cant wait to see ya play - ive heard bla bla about you" and that can stress me out sometimes. totally not trying to toot my own horn at all .... and i know Matt can kick my ass.

I know that I'm one of the few guys in my area to play a Music Man, and probably the first to play a Bongo. The Miami Vally is mostly a Fender/Gibson kinda place, so I'm kind of an outlier...

I'm known as the only bass player in the Bay Area that sports a new bass at every gig...and the first known Bongo sighting in this area.
