I posted this somewhere else in the guitar forums, but decided to go with my initial choice of buying a Dr. Z amp.

I took out a Maz 18 JR and loved it. I owned a Mini Z and loved it. I owned a Delta 88 and loved it. I took out a Stangray and loved it. I decided on a Prescription ES Jr. 1x12 combo and am going to put the BB Preamp in front of it.

It's more money this way, but it's the sound I've been looking for. When I want to get a heavier sound, I'll just suffer with my Laney combo until I buy a little Mesa Express or something.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I've had the fortunes of playing the Vai Legacy that you speak of... At first I was bent on getting because of it's great price (especially the combo). It does sound like a hot rodded Marshall and you can get a myriad of tones on it. I'll also second the mention that a Legacy 2 is in the works with a third channel for more gain. When I played it, it went through a THD hot plate and it sounded wonderful with the gain turned up. I don't find the clean channel too flavourful. It was a little dry and thin for my taste. Yes the Laney's cost double the price (I'm seriously considering the LC30 atm) but they are also good quality. The JSX is a beautiful amp, almost perfect for the player who's looking for lots of versatility. Just look at how Satch plays and how different one song can sound from the next.

You have to wonder why Carvin's stuff is so much cheaper than the rest of the market eh?

I own a Legacy head that I currently play through a 2x12 cab I built. I bought it when they went on sale. I love it. I think the clean channel is stellar and the drive channel is very smooth and has plenty of gain. I can't imagine needing more gain for leads or rhythm. It's not a 7-stringer de-tuned death metal amp. This amp has tone.

It's LOUD. Very loud and very smooth. It's a singing and dark-ish amp.

I use this amp along-side my Mesa Boogie Road King II. Two totally different voices. The Legacy is a STUPID value in amps.

I also owned a Carvin MTS and while it may have "more" gain, it's not nearly as smooth. Good cleans though.

I also owned a Peavey JSX and LOVED it. Excellent cleans and ridiculous amounts of gain. I regret selling that amp.

Buy the Legacy. You won't regret it.

Carvin hasn't said anything about the third channel yet. We don't know if there will be more gain at all.

hi
if you are not satisfied with the cleansound of the legacy , use a diamond guitar compressor pedal and you will be more than surprised.

because originally the legacy clean sound is more transparent , than on other amps you even
can play your acoustic guitar through it and it sounds great. but if you wanna have a real thick
and solid clean sound just use the diamond.

Yeah, no sh*t. Talk about thread revival.

Actually, it's weird that this thread came up. I was juggling the idea of a Legacy until about... two hours ago. I stumbled upon an absolutely smokin' deal on a Laney GH100L. I will play that, and probably buy a little Fender Deluxe or Mesa Express for a small at-home amp. I love Laney amps. It's sad that Paul Gilbert and Andy Timmons don't play on them anymore. Stupid Marshall and Mesa; you'll get yours. You sick sons of bitches will get yours! Comeuppance will be swift and deadly!

PS How often does comeuppance get used in daily rhetoric let alone internet banter?! I win the coveted "word geek of the day" prize! Go me!
