I am hearing I should get a Sansamp Bass Driver DI. As of now I just play straight to my amp. Everything sounds so good with the Sterling's active PU and preamp that I left it at that. Any thoughts? What would accentuate my beloved Sterling?

That makes me think of a dramatic commercial from my childhood. "Don't take the car, you'll kill yourself." Anyonw remember that one?

I dont think the sansamp is required with a lovely sterling. At least not for something you'd leave on all the time; maybe just to add some grit every now and then. I am looking to get a Tech 21 XXL distortion pedal sometime. Its got nice features and allows you to add attack, without distortion, which sounds cool for some solo stuff. Its distortion is also very good sounding.

That being said, I dont think the sterling needs anything thats always on, in your chain.

Yea since the Sterling is active and has a 3 EQ, I wondered if it would do much for my sound?

It gives your sound more presence and oomph. It also reacts to your bass' volume control. If you crank the bass and the pedal is on you'll get mild to medium distortion. You may like it or you may not. Some songs sound good with it and some don't (figures). I like mine (a GT2) for getting that classic rock vibe. Anything else I turn it off.

Edit: I would say, buy from a place with a generous return policy then live with it for a few days.

That is a stich that you posted some samples. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I am still on the fence. I heard the sams with a passive bass and it gave it new life but the Sterling already has life.

I use my Bass Driver all the time, but only really as a DI as it's far cleaner than the DI on my amp. I like the tone I get without using the sansamp preamp. It's a useful box to have if you don't have access to an amp.

Two advantages of the BDDI over a basic DI are the level control and the ability to have tone control. You can turn off all the added tone/drive/presence part if you want to at the click of the switch.

I really like having a DI with a level control whether that's the BDDI or on my preamp. That way I can run the volume where I want it on the bass (close to full open volume with EQ close to flat on the bass), and adjust the level to the board from the DI to make the soundman happy.

We recently replaced our DI at church with a Sansamp BDDI and so far I've been very happy. There are four of us that rotate through the bass chair now, and some play passive basses, so this was part of the solution to get a single rig that works for all of us. My Stingrays sound great through the BDDI. I like the 'Fat Tube' setting, with all the EQ knobs pointing straight up. I find it just adds a little extra bite to my DI tone. I use the unaffected/parallel output to go to my amp, so my stage sound is direct from my bass.

Two other DI's to consider with additional features are the Radial Bassbone and MXR M80 Bass DI (one for sale now in the bass forum).

Thanks Todd for the additional info. I also play at a church where a few of us rotate through bass. I am usually every other Sunday. I love doing it.

Sansamps make everything better, but I'm guessing my tone may be a bit more aggressive than yours.

mine is on the whole time, and I don't know what I'd do without it

The Radial Tonebone may be more to your liking

Get a GK Head if you don't have one, I do many gigs all over the country here and never know what kind of Amp will be there for me, but with a Music Man bass 3 band EQ it doesn't really mater cause I get a great tone out of anything, Yes even a Crate.DJ

Very Wierd I have been using them since 1984 and have 15 of their amps and never to this day ever had one problem, Mind you they don't get dropped off any trucks either tho.
