I have NEVER had an issue with this before (in my albeit limited experience with the For Sale threads here). The rules read "do not MERELY post an eBay link," which I take to mean that a description, picture, and price must accompany it to meet the rules. Once in the not-terribly recent past, in fact, I was told this by a mod, expanded the description a bit and added pricing, and all was good. Today, it seems I am butting heads with the interpretation of the word "merely." Thoughts?

Methinks the root problem is attitude expressed in your forum listing.
It's surely an appropriate attitude when directed at the denizens of the
Ebay Galaxy, but doesn't sit too well around here. Different strokes.

BTW while ebay is a krazy place where who can predict what just may
work .... this here place is more saner. So, considering what glorious
offerings are found here for $1400, and for well under $1400, even for
a "rare NOS" SLO-built bass, I somehow fail to see your offering as a
most-attractive-opportunity, given the competition it faces here.

On ebay, you just need that single, one-in-a-million buyer who's just
GOTTA HAVE some particular offering, cost-no-object. Here, we are
waaaaay short of a million, to say the least ;-)

I could be coerced into agreement with that, Golem, and wold consider revising the post...tat that isn't (what I'm being told is) te problem, which appears to be simply the fact that there IS an eBay link.

OK. Easy fix to vet your post for the For Sale thread:

1. No link.
2. Test a search string [to be sure it searches out your item].
3. Post the search string [so we can cut/paste to google it.]
4. Limit emphatic [harsh?] notices to the ebay site.
5. State the direct purchase price for forumites in the For Sale thread.

Thanks for the tips. I am leaving the eBay link, though. I kinda want to see its deleted (again) just over that being there.

Interesting, found here and clicking on the "Product availability" disclosure triangle:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-practices.html#other

"You're not allowed to:
List an item that may be out of stock at the time of purchase.
List an item that you're simultaneously selling outside of eBay.
Offer an item that may not be what's delivered to the buyer.
Offer an inflated number of items in a multi-quantity listing."

FWIW, I coulda offered you that advice by PM, but I figgered it
might be of use to others, so I posted here. Now it just seems
you like playing some kinda game. So ... expect this thread to
be locked or deleted soon. Reason being, this forum is NOT a
"Public Square". It's more like "Sterling Ball's Front Porch", so
the House Rules apply, his house, his rules. Your house, your
rules. My house, my rules. TalkBass house, no rules. Nuffsedd ?

No need to condescend. I have been a member here a number of years, and while my post count is low (to yours, comparatively), I know "the ropes." I own an Axis, a Super Sport, a 5-string SUB5, the SUB4 from the listing, a Sterling AX40D, which replaced, coincidently, a SUB1, which I sold here in the "For Sale" thread on the guitar side a number of years ago.

I assure you I am not "playing games." To me, ""do not MERELY post an eBay link" does NOT preclude the post from containing said dreaded link, but requires that a picture, a detailed description, and a price be included (which is exactly what I was told under similar conditions year's ago on the guitar side).

at a !000 it might take awhile to sell. I sold a sub 5 in that color on TB for 500 and the 5s are more rare. It took a few weeks. Good luck though, you might find that one guy that has got to have it and gives you what you are asking.

The forum isn't obligated to provide you a place to profit selling instruments online to a wider audience. If anything, it's in their best interest and the interest of their dealers to not allow the sale of used instruments on their official forum to begin with.

They don't exist to provide your auction a wider audience to have people compete against them driving up the price.

They don't allow for sale posts that say "Highest price PM'd to me wins." How is merely posting to an eBay auction any different? Why is Musicman obligated to help eBay make money when you sell an instrument there?

Why not simply post the instrument for sale here at a price you are willing to take and not include the auction link? If it sells here, you can simply end the auction early if no one has met the reserve. No need to drive traffic to ebay from here.

So, back to my original question, slightly modified: why IS THERE an eBay/ CL thread? I was "merely" trying to bring exposure to the forum members that I was selling the thing. I'd like a forum member to end up with it, frankly, but I'd like to sell it to anyone even more than that.

Having said that, I CAN'T afford to just sell it here. eBay/ PayPal afford certain protections that this site doesn't, and as I mentioned, I am prevented from two separate listings selling the item. It is what it is.

Pre-Trussbroken, I have seen plenty of "For Sale" posts that included an eBay link. That is the issue here. NONE of what you said. Why didn't I do what you would do? Well for starters, I am not you. Why wouldn't you do what I did? Same reason, perhaps?

Thank you for being constructive, five7. If it doesn't sell at that, I am keeping it. Its only listed because I had to replace a porch, furnace, AC, and I have a 2 year old. If it doesn't sell...I guess it's his.

John? *sigh*

ANYWAY, again...why IS THERE an eBay/ CL thread if we're discouraged from directing traffic away from here, why do the rules read "do not MERELY post an eBay link," and has it been the experience of others that their posts are being deleted for the mere existence in their content of an eBay link? It is a direct, simple, non-confrontational question.

Really?? Your ad was at most minimally rude, this is not ebay(which is evil) cant afford to sell it here?????

Lets see ebay listing charge(stupid)/ ebay final fees(outrageous), paypal another 4% so list it minus those fees and well now its a deal!

Do the math what does ebay/paypal add?

I am looking for answers to those questions.

Can I help you?

Number one....How much are we charging you? Nothing.

Who made the rules? The people here. The good members. I had and still have nothing to do with them except for allowing a member here to offer his or her instrument for sale...for once again no commission

SO we have something free where the rules were set collectively and you dont like a rule....I am really sorry but the few conditions that the members set here have to apply. Also the uncompensated mods know that we all have their backs.

Please ether conform or move on. This is a no good deed goes unpunished.

Thank you, BP. I take that to mean that your interpretation of "do not merely post an eBay link" is that one may not be included. My confusion was in a different interpretation made by a different moderator when I sold my SUB1. Please delete my "For Sale" post for the Cinnamon SUB4.

Ill get right on it....really? Switch positions for a minute....you are providing a FREE service that NO OTHER guitar company offers and some customer decides to throw a $hit fit over the rules...decides to run one tiny thing up the flag pole with indignancy and entitlement and then when explained instructs the owner of the international company to just delete his post....should I empty your trash too?

Give me a break.

Banned.

Fine. Moderators will discuss the existing rules on ebay listings. If there any changes, you'll know about it in due course.
