your best bet, but it can be expensive, go to a place that sells hearing aids. They can make a mold of your ear and you have your own custom made earplugs. It will run you about $150-$200 but your ears will thank you. You can still hear everything perfect, just at a lower level and much better than foam earplugs.

I'm going to check out getting a set of ear plugs like this.

I use toilet paper ...

no joke. I just roll up a little wad in shove it in my ear. It puts a damper on loudness that makes your ears ring, but lets enough sound through that you don't feel handicapped when playing.

Make fun if you want ... but it's free!!!!!

Toilet paper is excellent when you've forgotten your earplugs at home, or if you're just cheap. Half time I forget.. the other half I'm just a cheap SOB. :D

Have you people tried in-ear headphones instead of just plugs? Of course you're gonna pay more for them, but you can adjust your mix to your liking then and you're not gonna miss anything... They might be expensive, but you'll only pay for them once, and then replacement plugs if you use foam as the isolator part. Many pros are using them now, just look at the last 2 live DVDs of DT...
