I'm very lucky. I've been playing for 20 years at loud volumes & have never had ringing in my ears. I can't imagine playing with ear plugs either, hopefully I'll never have to.
your best bet, but it can be expensive, go to a place that sells hearing aids. They can make a mold of your ear and you have your own custom made earplugs. It will run you about $150-$200 but your ears will thank you. You can still hear everything perfect, just at a lower level and much better than foam earplugs.
I use toilet paper ...
no joke. I just roll up a little wad in shove it in my ear. It puts a damper on loudness that makes your ears ring, but lets enough sound through that you don't feel handicapped when playing.
