Just finished a 2 nighter way out in the country.Things were hopping more than usual. The bar owner was buying the band shots... lots of them. The crowd was buying us shots... lots of them. Ugly girls were grabbing my ass... lots of them... Oh what a night (I'm afraid to see the pictures)! I'll just go back to my hangover now.

Blazing Saddles is a classic, too! Whatever happened to Ol' Cleavon Little?

I think I remember reading that Cleavon Little pretty much went back to doing Broadway shows after his short-lived film career. Shame he didn't have more exposure.. great actor, good feel for comedy, sang well too.

That role was originally slated for Richard Pryor, who was one of the writers of that film. But his bad-boy drug reputation at the time scared the movie companies off, so Cleavon got it instead.

I think Gene Wilder as the Waco Kid was a last-minute substitution as well... something happened to the person who was supposed to play that role or some such thing.

(Wilder was also a writer on that film.)

Gotta love the campfire bean-eating scene. It's also funny to watch the film with the language track set to French. I don't know why, but it just comes off so funny that way!

Been gigging for quite some time (since '87)... but last night the all the stars happened to line up just right (truly it was one of those evenings that happens maybe once a year)... 10 shots of Firewater later (I think it was 10?!?!?), I am lucky I was still able to tell that the girls were ugly!

I'm not really an authority about much of anything (except maybe writing code for these computer thingies). I just look into these things on a whim and they get stuck in my gray matter. ;)

Mel Brooks discussed this on the director's commentary. He hired an actor who was an alcoholic to make the role more realistic. I guess the guy went into DT's or something on the first day of filming and Mel realized the idea wasn't that great. Could you imagine Blazing Saddles without Gene Wilder. Even worse, could you imagine that movie without Clevon... :(
