that really is the "official" reason why Flea stopped using the vintage J on tour. Wasn't cuttin' the mustard live for him. A lot of possible reasons for that. anywho, given his style/etc. no doubt he went back with the butane* Sting Ray

Close but I believe it was stated he couldnt cut through with a jazz and FLATS which is understandable..

Not to me.

Listen to fleas tone in concert, he has tons of highs and trebles and zing that roundwound are know for, flats are known for their THUMP sure you can get zing out of a round but its not the same..

Flea can play no doubt. I would find it hard to believe he ever strung flats on a bass given his wanker style.

I bet his mom loves him for playing in his underwear. :D

Anyone can play the in the box.

He just needs a spankin.

the old guy

Actually I agree with DTG....Im willing to bet that flea would win a bass off on most forums that bash him to death..... I like his playing especially in the early days a ton of energy

I'll say, BP. "Fill the holes in my finger tips with super-glue to finish a show? Can do!" (and has done)

Meh--I've played a gig where my callus was superglued back on after being ripped off, AND I've played a gig where I went right to the bar from the Emergency room with what turned out to be a gallstone attack. Probably made a lot less money than Flea for either of those gigs, too.

What else ya got? :D

I've found my favorite tunes to be in those years.

I like the new stuff some too though.

Favorite is BSSM.

I've glued my finger tips to my arm and ripped the skin off to cover the holes for a gig. (sounds more painful than it actually is)

Taking this part of the thread to its logical conclusion:

Michael Palin: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down the mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Graham Chapman: Luxury! We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!

Terry Gilliam: Well, we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.

Eric Idle: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

Michael Palin: But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

All: Nope, nope...

BP, when you say Flea wanted his name on the SR, do you mean he wanted it to henceforth actually be called the EBMM Flea (like the deal he struck with Modulus)? Or do you just mean that he wanted a signature model, with his signature on the headstock - like the Geddy Lee or Marcus Miller Jazz, etc ... ? Just curious.

well i would like to see Flea coming back home to musicman as well

but... i like his vintage jazzbass tone as well, and when he is hardly heard on that bass (live) there mostly is one reason: the guy behind the mixing console hasn't turned up the bass hard enough to cut through the mix???

because this seems to be the problem 9 out of 10 times during concerts from every band: the bass is always unheard, it's always lots and lots and lots booming bassdrum, or is it?

but, luckily i do have a rhcp live dvd (bootleg) that has a very fine mix, though it's not really a concert, it is more some kind of session (where he uses his '61 jazz) and the bass sounds very nice, nice trebles, and ofcourse with songs from stadium arcadium

I am not really a big fan of RHCP these days..just kinda outgrew em I guess. But I did have the experience of seeing them live in early-mid 90's..mothers milk tour and Blood sugar sex magic. Smaller venues as well. Flea was using the MM (the same black one that inspired me to try out MM SR's) and had no problem hearing him at all.

Now I did see them again my last time when they were headling lolla palooza (under the bridge crowd) and don't remember if he was using the SR (I was too far away to tell) but he sounded fine...but they had some other guitar player for that tour (not fruciante or navarro) and he just did not even come close to cutting it..so we left early.

On a side note I can't blame him for using an old Jazz (what ever the reason), they sound good to me (the board needs to crank up passive basses I'd imagine vs active, it's not the basses fault if he is lost in the mix and by all means he has plenty of attack in his playing), but personally I wish he would go back to the SR..it just seems right to me.

Well im a newbie here , however i must say this is a thread gone over the cliff! -lol Fact is no matter what anyone thinks of how flea plays ( and hes plays very well) thats not the point at all -it was -a business deal that soured-modu. does not care how well flea plays -their end was simple -well know artist -exposure -sell product -expense -yes !-we hope sales will well exceed the expense -all are happy-however if flea did not fullfull his end or MODU did not fullfill their end -then lawyers -managers -accountants ect- handle that end -what im trying to tell you guys is -if --for god knows-- what contractual glitch is or was - fleas atty said do not pick up a MODU bass untill further notice -you get the pic---please remember that business is business-on every level-please dont put a jump blame on the artist or the company that he may represent -grain of salt -Big Pappa was point on -i just used a lot more words lol its not love hate or brand love hate -just business

I'm sure it was just business, but somehow these damned Flea threads get way more attention than they merit.

Man, just think what would happen if he could get on the cover of Bass Player.

Anyhoo, this one's run its course (and back and then out and back again).
