I feel that one can never be too young to pick up music. Just gotta learn how to keep the youngin' interested. Rhys makes mucho sense with the piano suggestion. Get them started on understanding the big picture and then move them into a bass when they can physically handle it.

Sorta along those lines, I was trained classically on the tuba. Reading bass clef naturally led me to picking up the bass but I found I'm too ingrained with trying to read music as opposed to playing it. I always wished that I could have had piano lessons in my formative years. I feel I'd have a better grasp of song structures and such. Of course, maybe I just need to feel out the music more often and stop reading the damn sheet music.

Excellent points re: the piano! Especially when considering the physical aspects of the instrument.

He's asked about piano too from time to time - in fact we've discussed the fact that there are more than a few great bassists that also play keyboards (ala McCartney and Geddy Lee <= my kid LOVES Rush).

His B-Day is in August... Perhaps we start on the piano, give it a few years and see where it goes from there... :)
