I've got an 800rb that sounds great, except for one thing. Whenever the cable going into the Input jack is moved, the amp makes a sound like running your finger under a record player needle (that's the only way I can describe it). Now when I run wireless, this isn't an issue, but I'd like to get it resolved.

Any suggestions on what to check?

I would suggest popping the top off the GK (carefully as to not let any of the smoke out) and checking the jack itself. Probably either needs a new jack or needs the wiring going to it repaired.

The fact that it doesnt happen with the wireless, but does with a cable leads me to think its a bad cable.

Sorry for my first suggestion, but I thought it would be a given that more than one cable had been tried by this point.

Don't feel too bad. Could still be the culprit. The two plugs may be different enough to cause good contact on one and not so good contact on the other. All it would take is bending the jack's contacts towards the center.

Definitely check it with just bass>>cable>>amp (with more than one cable).

If you determine it's the amp it's probably just a bad solder joint on the jack. It's a very common problem with PCB wired amps, as the solders get stressed every time you plug something into them. An easy fix for anyone that knows how to solder properly. It'll take more time to pull the board up than it'll take to fix the problem. 15 minutes tops start to finish.

Hope that helps.

Definitely tried more than one cable, more than one bass.

I popped the top and looked around, and everything seemed ok. Took apart the input jack to check it out and when I put it back together, the sound is gone. I think it was just loose or something strange like that.

Thanks for the input guys!

What do you mean by "took apart the input jack"?. You took the nut off the front?

If I remember correctly, the solders are on the underside of the board, making them inpossible to see by popping the top off the amp. Just FYI...the fix may just be temporary.

Hope that helps.

And you made sure not to let any of the smoke out, right. :p

Not sure if you're thinking about the newer model 800rb, but on mine, take the top off, and the jack is right there. I took the nut off and popped it back into the head, checked the solder points, and put it back together. I think it was just a tad loose, and the movement of the cable was causing some movement of the jack
