OT: hard act to follow

I am now playing bass for Anthony Campbell but last year when they played the navel base we are playing on 8/11, the phenomenal Quinton Berry was Anthony Campbell's gun for hire. Talk about a hard act to follow. I am not in this gentleman's league and YES, he gigs holding the bass in that bizarre position as demonstrated in the vid. Maybe I will score some points for having XX chromosomes.

Lisa, you'll do just fine following him, though. You've got feel, timing and technique, and you were hired because they know you'll do the job well.
It's not like a bass solo performance, is it?
I used to get all nervous just going on stage where there had previously been a bass player with monster chops, but nowadays I'm comfortable doing what I do. I don't even go on about how our role is to support, keep it simple, in the pocket, bla bla bla, I just play the way I can and leave it at that.

Whenever I'm in a situation where I'm intimidated by another bass player I try and think along the lines of... Could Roger Waters play like that guy? Does Keith Richards have the virtuosity of this musician? Did this stuff hurt their career in any way? Does it really mean anything? I bring something to my playing that no other bass player can, and I pray (literally) that that's what shines through me. I believe it's the same for everyone.

I also try to make sure I don't see the band before me.

Ohhh yeah, just realized I have a similar gig coming up August 17th. 24/7 Spyz is playing right before us, and their bass player Rick Skatore is a legend of sorts. I believe Flea has even cites him as an influence. No escape on this one either cuz there's no place to hide in this particular club. Plus I really want to see them since I never have. While you might get credit for your XX chromasomes, I might have to take off all my clothes for extra points. I like doing that though. Hey if you just take off your top, you're guaranteed to upstage that guy.

[edit] just reread your post and realized I misundertood it. my apologies, yet what i said is still pertinent so i'm leaving it. congratulations on the gig. if they believe you're good enough to fill that guys shoes, then i believe you are.

I could and should probably be intimidated by anyone here on bass playing. I am not. Nor should you be thinking about the tough act to follow routine Lisa.

If you weren't holding the bottom down you wouldn't be there long enough to feel you were part of the band.

Lisa...Q is somewhat of a legend around here. I don't know him personally, but I have met him and he is very sincere and very humble. "Great guy" is the vibe I got.

Your topic...yes, hard act to follow in some cases, but let's look at it a different way. He was the hired gun.....now you are. Obviously, he can play, but you were selected to fill the gig. I am sure it was based upon your talent. So, I would take it as a compliment that you are just as talented. I wouldn't have made the cut and that is no joke.

Congrats on the gig and please let me know if you play in the Hampton Roads area as I will certainly be there to check out the show.

Agreed - Lisa, if you didn't have what the band wants and needs, you wouldn't be there. It's never easy following a solid act, but you will bring your own talent to the show, so let it shine!! (The XX thing wears off before long - believe me if you couldn't play well, they would not have hired you).

Thanks everyone for the encouragement!!!! I'll tell people Q wasn't good enough so they got me..... just kidding. Last year Q did a song with bass only. I think it was "Fly Like an Eagle". Uuuuhhhhhh needless to say that won't be happening this year because I wouldn't have the slightest idea of how to go about that feat. But seriously, it is cool that he is so amazing. I wish I could meet him but he won't be there, he just played with the band last year on the gig.

I will keep it in the pocket and solid as hell but Joe I can't take my top off..... my pastor and his wife will be in the crowd. :0

Lisa in the pocket is being a bass player. I don't know Q from A but I will tell you this if you weren't measuring up you wouldn't be the bass player.

The pocket is what playing a bass is about and many know how to stay in the pocket and expand. Guess what? Nobody hears the difference. The bass belongs in the pocket.


You are doing fine or there would be no second gig. NEVER EVER sell yourself short in this world. Life passes too quickly.
